WHEREAS, September 17th is Constitution Day, which commemorates the 1787 signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia. This year marks the two hundred and thirty-ninth anniversary of that historic day, when 39 delegates at the Constitutional Convention put their signatures on the nation’s founding document; and
WHEREAS, the Constitution is the framework of the nation’s government, and it establishes the rights and liberties of U.S. citizens. The document today continues to shape our society, which makes it fitting and proper to give official recognition to this historic day; and
WHEREAS, a joint resolution of Congress approved in 1956 designated September 17th through 23rd as Constitution Week. The legislation requires the President to issue a proclamation formally recognizing the week and inviting citizens to mark the occasion with ceremonies and educational programs; and
WHEREAS, on this day and during the ensuing week, we ask citizens to reaffirm the Constitution’s ideals as stated by the Framers, and to protect the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, and to always remember that lost rights may never be regained.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, Mayor Jerry Dyer and Members of the Fresno City Council, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17th through 23rd, 2026, to be:
“Constitution Week”
