DISCUSSION
Police Officer Trainee is the non-sworn, temporary classification that prepares individuals to become sworn police officers. The Department promotes a Police Officer Trainee to Police Officer I, the entry-level sworn position within the series, upon completion of a Police Officer Standards and Training academy. Additionally, the City may hire candidates with law enforcement experience who meet the requirements for Police Officer I as lateral appointments.

Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill No. 960 on September 29, 2022, which changed the minimum standard for peace officers from having United States citizenship or permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship to someone legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. This change in the law became effective January 1, 2023 and requires an update to the language in the current class specifications for POT and Police Officer Series. Staff has updated or removed language for clarification or clean-up purposes in addition to this change.
