RE: LRP- 2024- 0001 / West Wilshire and Wickett Square Neighborhood Zoning Amendment Planning Commissioners:
We’re writing to you in support of the establishment of the West Wilshire and Wickett Square Preservation Zone.
I am writing this letter today as a representative ofthe 62 people who support the creation of this preservation zone. As one of the representatives who was tasked with gathering signatures, I was amazed by the overwhelming support I received. This neighborhood is a unique neighborhood in Fullerton. I personally live in the center of this great neighborhood, on Wilshire which is the oldest planned community in Fullerton developed by Ernest S. Gregory. The people who did respond to the petitions showed support at well over 80 percent.
This neighborhood is the centerpiece of Fullerton, a pedestrian proud working- class neighborhood with mostly smaller homes many with porches that people sit on to visit with their neighbors. The location of the Annual 4th of July bike parade. An event that has grown to well over 1500 participants every year. A neighborhood where kids are out riding their bikes and residents know each other.
There were four of us tasked with gathering signatures. A task made more difficult becauseof the working- class demographic of the neighborhood. The neighborhood also has many rentals that made signature gathering more difficult as landlords were not quite as enthusiastic as owner occupants about this great neighborhood.
As a representative of the neighborhood, I love so much, I will be at the meeting on September 11thto show my support as I know so many of my neighbors will be. Many of those who oppose have shown concern as to limiting whatthey can do with their property, a sentiment I understand. I hope they can see that what we intend to do is lift this neighborhood to protect it from overdevelopment on a scale that would harm its small- town charm.
