RE: Support for AB 91 (Harabedian) – State and local agencies: demographic data Dear Assemblymember Harabedian:
I am writing to express my strong support for Assembly Bill 91, which will require state and local agencies in California to collect and report demographic data using separate categories and tabulations for major Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) groups.
Currently, many MENA communities are not accurately represented in demographic data, often being grouped into broader categories that obscure their unique identities and needs. AB 91 will ensure that these communities are recognized, and that data about their ancestry and ethnic origins is collected and made publicly available in accordance with privacy protections. This will improve the state’s ability to identify disparities, allocate resources equitably, and craft policies that address the specific needs of MENA Californians.
By updating demographic data practices, AB 91 will help California remain a leader in equity, inclusion, and transparency. I urge your colleagues in the Legislature to support this important bill.
Thank you for your leadership on this issue.
Sincerely,
Fred Jung, Mayor
City of Fullerton
