Res. No. PC-2026-01
2. The Landmarks Commission, pursuant to FMC Chapter 15.48, makes the following findings regarding the Landmark designation for the subject property:
a. Finding: The property located at 401 Cannon Lane is eligible for a Historical Landmark designation in accordance with the criteria identified in FMC Section 15.48.060.
Fact: The property meets Local Landmark eligibility Criterion 3, because of its association with notable residents of Fullerton. Two early owners of the residence established and served as presidents of two notable Orange County companies. Alexander Glen Wright, Sr. started the Orange County Rock Company, serving as president and manager; Hugh H. Bridgford founded the Bridgford Foods Corporation in 1944, serving as president. At one time, the Bridgford Food Company was Orange County's only producer of United States government inspected meats. Still in business, the firm continues to be managed by Bridgford family members.
Fact: The property also meets Local Landmark eligibility Criterion 7, as the 5,329-square- foot residence is a superb example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a dramatic standout in a subdivision that includes a remarkable collection of 1920s and 1930s Spanish-styled homes.
b. Finding: The property located at 845 North Euclid Street is eligible for a Historical Landmark designation in accordance with the criteria identified in FMC Section 15.48.060.
Fact: The property meets Local Landmark eligibility Criterion 3, because of its association with notable residents of Fullerton. The residence is identified with people who significantly contributed to the development of the City: builders Robert Carey, William Potter and Evan J. Herbert.
Fact: The property also meets Local Landmark eligibility Criterion 7, as it exemplifies a particular architectural style (Spanish Colonial Revival) which was an unusual design for a two-story grove house.
c. Finding: The property located at 545 West Fern Drive is eligible for a Historical Landmark designation in accordance with the criteria identified in FMC Section 15.48.060.
Fact: The property meets Local Landmark eligibility Criterion 3, because of its association with notable residents of Fullerton. The property has the distinction of being the first residence in Fullerton - and most likely Orange County - designed by a woman. At a time when there were few female architects in California, Anna C. Geck forged a remarkable and prolific career as an artistic designer of elegant homes throughout Southern California.
Fact: The property also meets Local Landmark eligibility Criterion 7, as it is one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in Fullerton. It is also adjacent to three other designated Fullerton Local Landmarks: the Mills House (511 West Fern Drive), the Cleaver House (519 West Fern Drive), and the Arthur Kelley House (539 West Fern Drive).
d. Finding: The property located at 600 West Valley View Drive is eligible for a Historical Landmark designation in accordance with the criteria identified in FMC Section 15.48.060.
Fact: The property meets Local Landmark eligibility Criterion 3, because of its association with notable residents of Fullerton. The home was constructed and designed for $10,000 by one of Fullerton's best-known early builders, Arthur M. Thompson, who had a hand in 2 Res. No. PC-2026-01
the construction of a number of notable residences in the City. The initial owners of the property were Eric and Ester Lamhofer, who resided in the house until 1936. Eric Lamhofer was a salesman for the Home Oil Company in Anaheim and would later manage citrus properties.
Fact: The property also meets Local Landmark eligibility Criterion 7, as the two-story residence represents a fine example of English Tudor Revival architecture with its steep, shake-covered gable roofs, stucco walls with half-timber decorative bracing, detailed brick-capped chimney, and the well-positioned and proportioned multi-paned casement windows. In addition to the brick trimmed entry, there are outstanding details on all sides of the structure, and the detached garage continues the architectural style. e. Finding: Designation of this property as a Historical (Local) Landmark is consistent with the goals and policies contained in The Fullerton Plan.
Fact: The Historic Landmark Designation of these properties support The Fullerton Plan, Policy 4.2 Awareness of Historic Resources which supports programs and policies to raise the awareness of the value of historic resources in strengthening communities, conserving resources, fostering economic development, and enriching lives.
Fact: The Historic Landmark designation of the subject properties support The Fullerton Plan, Policy 4.4 Historic Character and Sense of Place which supports actions to reinforce the character and sense of place of established neighborhoods. f. Finding: Property owner consent for the Historical Landmark designation has been granted pursuant to FMC 15.48.050.
Fact: The property owner for each site has given written consent for the filing of the application for landmark designation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Landmarks Commission does hereby APPROVE ZON-2025-0101, ZON-2025-0114, ZON-2025-0124 and ZON-2025-0134, designating properties at 401 Cannon Lane as Historical Landmark (HL) HL-113, 845 North Euclid Street as HL-114, 545 West Fern Drive as HL-115, and 600 West Valley View Drive as HL-116 and recommends the City Council amend The Fullerton Plan Historic Preservation Element, Table 6 - City of Fullerton Local Register of Historical Resources and Exhibit 3 - Historical Resources Map - National and Local.
