OBJECTIVE
For the City Council to adopt a Proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Council Member Nguyen-Penaloza introduced a Proclamation to honor Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 2020, which was approved unanimously by the City Council to be adopted annually. This year’s #1Thing DVAM Campaign is being funded by the Administration for Children and Families. Think of #1Thing you can do to get involved, take action, and make a difference for those affected by domestic violence. Events through the U .S. Department of Health and Human Services to raise awareness take place throughout the year, and dur ing Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), victim advocates, allied professionals, survivors of abuse, their loved ones, and the surrounding community come together to mourn the lives lost to domestic violence, celebrate the progress that has been made to end this epidemic, and connect with others working to create change. Adoption of an annual Proclamation validates the support of the City Council to bring awareness to the community and foster empathy for those suffering.

RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council:
Adopt a Proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
