OBJECTIVE
For the City Council to adopt a Proclamation recognizing May through August 2026, as Drowning Prevention Awareness Season.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Drowning remains a leading cause of preventable injury -related deaths, especially among young children, during the summer months when water activities increase. Proclaiming May through August 2026 as “Drowning Prevention Awareness Season” supports ongoing community education efforts led by the Orange County Fire Authority to promote water safety, active supervision, and drowning prevention awareness. OCFA strives to empower individuals to recognize and mitigate the dangers of water -related activities and prevent tragedies.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
There is no financial impact.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council:
Adopt the Proclamation recognizing May Through August, 2026 as Drowning Prevention Awareness Season with the City ’s participation in the Orange County Fire Authority’s 2026 campaigns, “Always Watch the Water” and “Never Swim Alone.”
