5. CITY COUNCIL/STAFF COMMENTS
Councilmember Brotman hiked to the top of Mount Lukens with retired Police Chief Carl Povilaitis and a resident, Jon Hampkins.
Councilmember Devine stated that today was giving Tuesday. She thanked Marian Getts for delivering meals to the homeless on Thanksgiving.
Councilmember Asatryan stated that there was a long list of events that she attended. She mentioned the Montrose Tree Lighting Ceremony that she and her colleagues attended and wanted to thank the Montrose Shopping Park Association. Asatryan wanted to inform everyone that the HI-Am Foundation will host a Komitas Quartet, which is a classical music concert that will take place on December 9th at 7pm at the Presbyterian Church of Glendale.
Tickets can be purchased at https://hiamfoundation.com/. On Thursday, December 8th 6:00- 8:30pm, Asatryan will be serving on a panel, which is hosted by the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles in collaboration with Japan House. The panel is called “World Assembly for Women in LA”– women’s essential role in an inclusive society; and she invited the women and girls to join in and participate in this event. Asatryan asked staff to provide a report on hosting an annual small business week, which would provide networking, educational workshops, and resources for small businesses and help businesses in getting certification as “minority and women-owned”. She indicated that the week will be May 7-13, 2023 and hoped to get a report from staff on what it will take to organize this. Kassakhian seconded.
Councilmember Najarian invited the public to attend the Holiday Tree Lighting Event on December 1st at 6:00pm at Glendale City Hall Perkins Plaza. He stated that it will be rainy this week and advised the public to turn off their sprinklers and let the rain soak the ground for a week before getting back on the cycle of watering again to help the ongoing drought situation.
Mayor Kassakhian invited the public to attend the Annual Montrose Christmas Parade this Saturday at 6pm. He thanked his colleagues for attending the tree lighting in Montrose last weekend, which he was not able to attend due to personal obligations. Kassakhian invited 11 29 22

4 the public to stop by Glendale City Hall to see the beautiful holiday decorations that were installed by Chris Peplow and his team. He congratulated the US Soccer Team for defeating Iran in the World Cup match. He acknowledged the political protests that are currently taking place in Iran. Kassakhian stated that he was asked by members of the Glendale community and the Iranian community at large where he stood on the issue of these protests. He acknowledged that neither he nor the people of Glendale are strangers to the politics of Iran, as many residents of the City trance their familial roots to Iran, and are all too familiar with the repressive regimes whether it was under the Shah or the post-revolution governments.
He spoke about the death of Mahsa Amini and the restrictive and oppressive laws impacting women in particular. Kassakhian stated that as a parent and a human being, he believes that we should all condemn acts of brutality and support those who wish to live their lives freely without repression, violence, and restrictions on their basic human rights. Kassakhian stated that he stands with the brave women of Iran who are calling for their government to heed their cries and change so that brutality never visits another person again, that all people have the basic rights and freedoms of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and that no government should use violence against its own people. He hopes and prays that peace and freedom will prevail. Kassakhian stated that food banks such as the ones at the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, and Glendale Community College, and across the region are low on food and asked the public if they have anything to spare to contribute to these food banks and help replenish their supplies. Kassakhian asked staff to provide a report on the cost benefit analysis of the phases of the Verdugo Wash project. Asatryan seconded.
City Manager Roubik Golanian stated that due to forecast of rain this week, the holiday tree lighting at the Perkins Plaza may be cancelled and asked the Director of Public Works Yazdan Emrani to provide information on where to get sand and sandbags for protection against flash floods. Emrani stated that sand and sand bags are ready to be picked-up at certain locations across the city and advised the public to bring their own shovel and help themselves. Golanian invited the public to attend a community open house at the Glendale Civic Auditorium related to the proposed Scholl Canyon and Biogas project on November 30th from 6-8pm. There will be multiple driving tours of the Scholl Canyon Landfill on December 3rd starting at 3:00pm. On December 7th, starting at 4:30pm, the future of the landfill open space and recreation uses will be discussed at the Jewel Bridges Clubhouse.
