CITY COUNCIL/STAFF COMMENTS |
Councilmembers sent their condolences on the passing of Councilmember Najarian’s father, Vartkes Najarian, M.D. and the meeting was adjourned in his memory.
Councilmember Kassakhian attended several events this weekend with his colleagues. He had the honor of attending and speaking at the Sustainable Gardens Tour that happened across LA County. One of the facilities featured at the tour was Benjamin Franklin Elementary School in Glendale which is planted with native flowers and plants and has become a !ocal attraction. He stated that this is something that we should replicate in other parts of the city and other school campuses in Glendale. Kassakhian discussed last week’s item, which was the demolition of an older home in South Glendale. He indicated that older homes that could possibly be historic in the southern part of Glendale are in greater threat of neglect and dilapidation compared to other parts of the city which will ultimately result in them becoming unsalvageable and demolished. Kassakhian stated that when the timing is right, he will ask council to have a discussion on how to set aside funds and incentivize owners to maintain older historic homes. Kassakhian also noticed that some newer mixed-use buildings in South.
Glendale have been vacant for several years. He spoke about providing incentives to artists and leasing out these spaces to display art. Asatryan stated her support of Kassakhian’s . Proposal in wanting to find ways to use the unused spaces in South Glendale and for the city to set aside funds to make this happen.
| Councilmember Asatryan attended the 100" Year Anniversary of the Armenian Cinema and acknowledged Glendale staff, Glendale Arts, the Armenian Film Society, and Vigen Chaldranyan for putting up a wonderful event. In light of Sexual Awareness Month, Asatryan announced that if anyone needs from domestic violence, to call the YWCA at 888.999.7511 or 818.242.4155. , ;
Mayor Brotman established some guidelines regarding Oral Communication. For action items, he will allow one person to cede their time to a speaker. Brotman will not allow speakers to cede their time for the three-minute’ or five-minute portion of the Oral Communications. Mayor Brotman attended a Cal-Cities Conference i in Sacramento last week. He spoke about a presentation made by the Beverly Hills Mayor and Fire Chief on Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) Program which is a mobile urgent care program. The MIH Program can reduce the cost 2 of EMS responses by creating small and mobile nurse-supported units that can treat non-life- threatening cases in the field. The Beverly Hills Fire Department is organizing an MIH Program Summit and inviting cities’ fire departments staff to attend. Brotman wondered if the City can replicate the MIH Program Summit. He also discussed “Project Roomkey,” which is a program funded by the state. Project Roomkey is a coordinated effort to secure old hotel! and motel rooms in LA County as temporary shelters for people experiencing homelessness. He stated that Glendale staff are putting in an application to acquire funds from the state and getting assistance from other agencies on how to fill out the application. Brotman attended the Adelante Latinos Award Ceremony in conjunction with Glendale Unified School District, which recognizes and honors high achieving 8"-12" grade students. Lastly, he attended the Armenian History Month Celebration at the Glendale Central Library and acknowledged staff for a well-attended event.
