5.CITY COUNCIL/STAFF COMMENTS
Councilmember Asatryan directed staff to post the agenda forecast on the city’s website to make it available to the public. Kassakhian seconded. Councilmember Asatryan asked that the motions in the minutes include the specific directions given by councilmembers. City Attorney Garcia stated that when there is a motion to note and file with additional directions from Council, those directions are not usually included in the motion as conditions. He asked that if there is a specific direction that Council would like to include as a condition of that motion, that they make that direction explicit.
Councilmember Devine announced that Glenn Webb, an environmental and sustainability advocate, passed away. She sent her condolences to the family of the deceased.
Mayor Brotman spoke about the catastrophic loss and ethnic cleansing of Armenians by the Azerbaijani government from the Republic of Artsakh. He stated that we should be thinking about asking our government to put sanctions on Azerbaijan and call out the war crimes of the Aliyev regime.
Asatryan reiterated that what is taking place in Artsakh is genocide and stated that all the residents of the Glendale sister city of Martuni have been moved out of their homes. She stated that here are thousands of families who have become homeless and thousands more who are trying to escape to safety. Councilmember Asatryan expressed disappointment in the pledge that Samantha Powers had made for humanitarian aid to the refugees from Artsakh stating that it was grossly insufficient and insulting. She also mentioned that the Azerbaijani government has rounded up all the leaders of the Republic of Artsakh to try them and she compare this to the rounding up and execution of all the leaders and intellectuals during the 1915 Armenian Genocide. She made a call to the allies of the Armenian community to speak up and help with humanitarian efforts. Asatryan spoke about her family in Artsakh and the connection that most Armenians have to the impacted families.
She spoke about the humanitarian campaign that was launched to help the survivors of the 1915 genocide and made a call for a similar action in the US to address the current humanitarian crisis. She invited the public to visit the website https://americawethankyou.org/, to learn more about the movement to recognize the outpouring of generosity by the American people from the onset of the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923).
