DROCLAMATION
Whereas, the City of Glendale, in accordance with Senate Bill 1383, recognizes that food waste is a global problem that has significant social, economic, and environmental consequences, and
Whereas, food waste prevention is an essential step towards reducing the adverse impacts of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions while helping combat food insecurity, and
Whereas, increasing food waste prevention, encouraging edible food donation, and expanding the composting of organic waste throughout the City of Glendale will help reduce methane emissions from organic waste disposed in our landfills; and Whereas, organics recycling also helps create valuable compost that can enrich our soil, reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers, and help conserve water; and Whereas, the City of Glendale encourages businesses and large public events to donate edible food that would otherwise be discarded in order to help feed families in our communities, reduce food insecurity, and promote sustainable practices; and Now, therefore, I, Daniel Brotman, Mayor of the City of Glendale, proclaim April 1 - 7, 2024 as
Food Waste Prevention Week
and urge all businesses, organizations, and residents to join in the efforts to prevent food waste and participate in edible food recovery programs. By working together, we can raise awareness and take action to reduce food waste throughout our community and help create a more sustainable future for ourselves and for generations to come.
