CALIFORNIA
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the month of April is nationally recognized as "Sexual Assault Awareness Month"; and
Whereas, every 68 seconds, someone in America is sexually assaulted.
Approximately 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime, and the majority of sexual assault victims are under the age of 30, 54% between the ages of 18-34; and Whereas, with proper education there is compelling evidence that we can successfully reduce the incidents of this physically and psychologically damaging crime; and
Whereas, both "Sexual Assault Awareness Month" and "Denim Day" are intended to draw attention to the fact that rape and sexual assault are serious issues in our society; and
Whereas, "Sexual Assault Awareness Month" and "Denim Day" were instituted to call attention to misconceptions and misinformation about rape and sexual assault, and the problem that many in society remain disturbingly uninformed with respect to issues of assault and forcible rape allowing these crimes to persist and victim/survivors to be re-victimized; and Now, therefore, I, Daniel Brotman, Mayor of the City of Glendale, hereby proclaim the month of April 2024, as
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
and urge everyone to spread the message that there is no excuse for sexual violence.
