Daniel D. Paul,
Historic Preservation Commission Applicant
Statement of Purpose
February 23, 2023
I am delighted to submit this application as a potential City of Glendale Historic Preservation Commissioner. I see myself as an objective and informed applicant. I teach my GCC architectural history students that buildings, structures, objects, and designed landscape elements are an unavoidable part of our shared environment. For the history, memory, and sense of our shared place they embed, it is key to properly see, and sometimes preserve- in detail- examples of such work. Through my ability to communicate plus my experience and understanding of this subject, I shall strive to facilitate positive preservation for our City.

Goals/Issues
While keeping an eye towards Glendale's long term growth and development, the Commission can still focus on maintaining the area's cultural fabric and unique identity. This means advocating for smart growth and honing in on developments that specifically retain and improve upon Glendale's biggest strengths: safety, expansive amenities, convenient access, etc.

My goals, if appointed, include:
- Implementing public policy that would further advance the city's long term growth and stability while preserving Glendale's unique neighborhoods • Improve upon Glendale's current office space offerings in an effort to bring in large-scale employers (with a successful recent example being, CBRE) • Add experiential retail options to make the area more attractive to young individuals living in other parts of Los Angeles
• Improve Glendale's job/housing balance to increase the amount of people who work and live in the city
- Work with fellow commissioners and staff to address concerns regarding overdevelopment, traffic and environmental impacts by using best practices and design - More seamlessly connect Glendale to Atwater Village, especially as the LA River continues to improve and draw in tourists and local visitors

I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to be nominated by Councilmember Daniel Brotman for the City of Glendale's Parks, Recreation and Community Service Commission.

Having grown up in South Glendale, I've had the privilege of enjoying the beautiful park and recreation spaces across the city. From Windsor Mini Park, Brand Park, up to Montrose Community Park and more, I have leisured the diversity of both passive and active uses offered, and strongly believe that as our city grows, that every resident in our community should continue to have he same access to open space as I did. When my son was born, I experience Glendale's parks and services in a whole new way, taking advantage of Simplex, basebal go Pes at Phe chol anyon Basebal Feds as Summer Day Camps at Verdugo Park
As the City continues to improve the quality of our parks, I hope to maintain a balance of both active and passive uses in future redevelopment so that residents can continue to have access to healthier, more natural environments where such space is lacking, such as in South Glendale. In addition, I hope to continue the important efforts of my predecessor in championing the evaluation of underutilized lots for conversion to open park space. To expand this initiative, I believe the city would benefit from a citywide, comprehensive assessment of our open spaces to consider how we can continue to improve our parks, recreation, and community services, particularly for our most vulnerable residents.

I also recognize that the lands which the City of Glendale occupies, was stolen from Tongva people, and the City's foundation was built on racist principles as a sundown town. The city has evolved into a diverse community of immigrants:
a cultural enciave and home to families of Armenian, Mexican, Salvadoran, Filipino, Korean, and many other ethnic backgrounds. If my nomination is approved, I hope to redefine our open spaces and community services in ways that promote inclusivity and equity, while considering the dire need for more sustainable practices to preserve our open spaces for future generations.

Again, thank you for the opportunity to be considered for the Parks, Recreation and Community Service Commission.

Sincerely.
