Mayor & Glendale City Council,
I am disappointed and confused. I thought we were going to have (finally!!!) Rockhaven landscaped as a beautiful park-like setting open to the public with gardens and the Pines cottage as our museum. It now sounds like we will only get the museum in which plans will also include destroying an historic room to put in a bathroom! Really?!. All that money spent for the proposed project only to pull back and only have a museum. I am very disappointed in the City of Glendale. I don't think this is how the money Anthony got for this project was intended to be applied and I don't think that you can find many locals in favor of this direction. Glendale seems to have money for other functions but apparently not in preserving our local Montrose/La Crescenta history.

Update on Rockhaven
Our last hill to battle upon!
Below is an abridged letter I wrote to the City Council, City Planning department, and even the folks at ARG and SWA. We printed this out and had it at the annual meeting where 72 folks signed their names, some even adding personal notes. We sent those in 72 separate envelopes to the Council, and one digital version to the city clerk for their records.

Please copy and paste this into an email you can send to City Council and alert them to the limitations and destruction that the plans hold for the museum as they are now. And be sure to include the City Clerk, and the project leads, Bradley Calvert, and Mark Berry in your letter or email! please add your own sentiments if you are inspired:

Dear Mayor Asatryan and City Council,
We thank you for all your efforts to preserve as much as can be at Rockhaven Historic district.

Rockhaven is the last remaining sanitarium in a valley that was once filled with sanitariums and it needs to be preserved.

We hope you will reconsider the plans to alter the interiors of The Pines in any way. The Pines building is really already a museum. People have been coming and enjoying it for years on tours.

The amazing tiles in the bathrooms are an integral part of the building. It would be a tragedy to lose even one of them as they are all unique.

The many rooms would be great to walk through and see different displays educating people about the history of our valley. The closets still hold traces of the women who were cared for there and should not be removed.

The restrooms should be located outside the building in an area where they would be used by the whole park and the museum.

Please answer our pleas and go for the least amount of change and the most amount of preservation.

THANK YOU for speaking up for our historic park! It always makes a difference!

Dear Mayor Asatryan, Members of the Glendale City Council, and City Officials:

The preservation of Rockhaven is important for the entire San Gabriel Vally, which once had hundreds of sanitariums established for patients suffering from tuberculosis. After the destruction of Mountain View Sanitarium, designed by architect Myron Hunt (architect of the Rose Bowl, the Huntington Library and the Pasadena Public Library) in the Altadena Foothills for a development project, Rockhaven remains as the sole surviving sanitarium of the era before a medical cure for tuberculosis was found.

It is also significant as a major monument of women’s history in the San Gabriel Valley, perhaps even in Los Angeles County.

Please preserve Rockhaven in its entirety, the buildings exactly as they are and the landscape as close as possible to its documented past.

Destroying or altering this site will result in a loss of a key element in the area’s local history.

In the 1960s, the City of Pasadena recognized that the Gamble House was in danger of being destroyed. The house, with its outdoor sleeping porches, is from the same era as Rockhaven, when sleeping outdoors in the warm dry air of Southern California was believed to prevent tuberculosis.

The City acquired the property, and now it is an internationally-known tourist destination, preserved with virtually no alterations to its interior or exterior.

You now have the opportunity to preserve a significant property for the City of Glendale. This significance will only grow as the years pass, and you, as City Council members and City officials, will be remembered as the people who had the foresight to act to preserve the site.

Please don’t squander this opportunity.

Sincerely yours,

Ann Scheid

CAUTION: This email was delivered from the Internet. Do not click links, open attachments, or reply if you are unsure as to the sender.

Dear Ms. Abajian,
I am writing to express my strong support for preserving the Rockhaven property as a public space and to encourage you to continue working toward a solution that ensures the entire property remains accessible to the community.

It has come to my attention that there is a current assumption that The Pines building is the only public area on the property, which has led to plans that treat the rest of the land as private or restricted. While I appreciate the focus on accessible walkways and landscaping, I am concerned that if these plans move forward, large portions of this historic property may not be available for public use.

I want to highlight that writing to the City Council has already made a difference. Thanks to community input, staff have reconsidered previous plans and are now looking at ways to preserve key features of the property, including the bathroom, and are working to keep the wall and closet intact. These changes are encouraging, but there is still much work to be done to ensure that the entire Rockhaven property is developed into a space that serves the public for generations to come.

I understand that there are pressures to meet the March 2026 deadline to secure the $8 million funding, but I urge you to prioritize a plan that respects the property’s historic value and opens up the full space for public enjoyment. Rockhaven is an invaluable resource, and we must protect its legacy while making it accessible to all.

Thank you for your continued efforts, and for considering the public's interest in this important matter. Please work with Friends of Rockhaven to create a vibrant and welcoming space that honors the past and the future of Rockhaven.

Sincerely,
Roana Thornock

Esteemed City Council of Glendale:

It is with gratitude that I acknowledge your efforts to save/restore Rock Haven. Rock Haven is such an important part of local & women's history, one that should be honored by all means.

My concern at this point, is the plan for destroying a portion of the interior of The Pines in order to "modernize" it for public access. I honestly believe that keeping the integrity of the interior of The Pines is an important acknowledgement to its original function.

Rather than destroying the historical integrity of the interior of The Pines with the addition of a warming kitchen & accessible bathrooms, I'd like to suggest that you visit Lanterman House, in particular the Visitor's Center & side office that was once the garage for an idea on how to proceed.

It would be much better to transform Rock Haven's garage or main office into a central Visitors' Center w/ proposed warming kitchen and accessible bathrooms, thus maintaining the historical significance/integrity of The Pines.

I honestly believe that too many people in these modern times tend to lack understanding/respect for the historical significance of early 20th century buildings such as Rock Haven, and it would be a shame to see that lack of understanding ruin the interior of The Pines.

Thank-you for your understanding & taking a pro-active approach to maintaining the interior structural integrity of The Pines and constructing the warming kitchen & accessible bathrooms in a more suitable location.

Sincerely
