2 Frank Lloyd Wright Jr's 1926 Derby House
Street Elevation Description:
2535 East Chevy Chase Drive, Glendale, CA, 91206. The James Daniel Derby House was built in 1926 by Frank Lloyd Wright Junior. The home is a mix of stuccoed concrete block and interlocking concrete textile block construction on a concrete foundation. Frank Lloyd Wright Junior introduced his father to the textile block system which the elder Wright went on to use extensively in his own work. At the Derby house, the blocks are patterned with geometric ziggurat shapes, inspired by ancient Mesoamerican architecture such as Teotihuacan and perhaps by Islamic architecture as well. These exterior textile blocks are sometimes pierced to provide light and air to interior spaces and other times are utilized as solid blocks for pillars and parapet walls.

From the street elevation, true to the Lloyd Wright family style, the entrance to the home is not easily discernable. Sited on a challenging wooded slope, the back of the house is built into the hillside. From the sidewalk, the house is fronted by a small concrete patio, raised from the street by one low step. The concrete is scored into small squares which are aligned with the sidewalk.

The home appears to be two connected rectangular towers with a matching one-story stucco wall intersecting the taller tower on its left side. The towers are of plain, natural colored stucco with a smooth finish. Portions of each tower are built of patterned textile blocks. Their roofs are flat.

The shorter of the two towers is located to the right and is set diagonally to the street. It is built almost entirely of pierced textile blocks, with a band of plain stucco at the top.

At the point where the two towers intersect, three steps leading to an open doorway are visible in the shorter tower. This leads to a hidden exterior staircase shaded by the pierced textile block wall. Another doorway is visible at the far-right side of the shorter tower and a one story tall plain stucco retaining wall is visible at the extreme right side of the building. At the second story level of the shorter tower, textile blocks are used as pillars for an open staircase landing. This landing has three rectangular openings facing the driveway and two openings facing the right side of the property, which allow light and air into the hidden exterior staircase.

The taller tower faces the street squarely and has a garage at street level, approached by a short diagonal driveway. A diagonally placed, one story tall stucco wall to the left side leads to the garage and intersects the taller tower. The concrete of the driveway is scored into large squares placed diagonally to the street. The garage retains its original wrought iron gates in a stylized foliate pattern, again seemingly influenced by ancient Mesoamerican motifs. Textile blocks, both pierced and solid, form an overhanging balcony which shelters the garage entrance. Partially hidden from view behind the textile block balcony parapet are three large glass doors with horizontal mullions. A hood of textile blocks are used to shade the balcony and extend upwards to the roofline.

At the far-left side of the street elevation, a curving flight of concrete stairs winds from the sidewalk uphill behind the tall stucco wall. This staircase leads to another entrance and a large patio. As the area is not clearly visible from the street, it is not included in this street elevation description.
