Approved for February 11, 2025 calendar

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Summer Lunch 2025 grant funding will be used to support pop-up library programming at community meal sites for a total grant amount of $5,714. Of the 2.4 million public school students in California who receive a free or reduced-price lunch during the school year, only one out of six receive one during the summer according to the Food Research & Action Center. Additionally, according to the National Summer Learning Association, low-income children typically lose two to three months of reading skills over the summer, which can be mitigated by participating in library Summer Reading programs. To address both of these challenges, the California State Library provides grant funds to take pop-up libraries including programming, resources, and book giveaways to community-based summer meal sites, such as local parks and schools and to support libraries that act as free summer meal sites. Glendale Library, Arts and Culture (GLAC) has received funding through this program for several years to support both outreach and hosting meal sites at libraries.
