CARA LYNCH
"Belonging"
Proposal for Fremont Park
Art Tiles for Columns
City of Glendale
My concept for tilework, "Belonging,' ," (to be placed on the columns at Fremont Park for the City of Glendale) celebrates community and local landscape through an abstract vocabulary of pattern, color and form.

The variety of patterns in my design for this project come together in cohesive diL compositions, speaking to notions of diversity, belonging, and community.

Deliberate references to quilting, textile, and decoration call to mind notions of community, family, and home.

The palette and flora featured in the design are inspired by regional plants that speak to ideas of belonging and place.

Three themes are included in this proposal: Native Wildflower Fields (C4 Columns), Quilted Landscapes (C4, C1 Columns), and Glendale Quilts (C2 Columns). All tiles are 3 x 3 inches, except C1 columns, measuring 8 × 8 inches).

Design can be simplified, color palette can be adjusted, or design direction can emphasize one or more themes or options presented. Not all designs provided need to be implemented, and additional design work will take place if proposal is selected.)
(This is a proposal and final design may vary. It will be more refined and nuanced.) Large and small-scale design elements in each column allow the artwork to be enjoyed from a variety of distances.

Visitors will discover something new in the artwork each time they visit the park.

Some column designs will repeat, occasionally in another colorway or alternative arrangement. Patterned tiles that form the basis of each design will be found throughout the park, incorporated in different designs. This allows for variety and visual interest- while still allowing the design elements to feel unified, creating a cohesive experience.

Tiles will be fabricated in hand glazed ceramic. (They could also be fabricated in opaque glass, if desired.) Site Map

In addition to floral inspired patterns,
these landscapes incorporate
geometric pattern elements, such as stars and chevrons
Several different landscape designs could be created.

Sunny Desert Valley (C4)
An abstract sun shines down
on patterned fields of
flowers.

This column draws
inspiration from the sun and
fun of Glendale, as well as
repeating "blocks" found in
quilting- making connections
to community, family,
belonging, and home.

A large scale element
playfully interrupts the
pattern, allowing for variety,
unity, and increased impact
when viewed at a distance.

Some tiles repeat, and some
are unique, but pattern and
flora are present throughout.

Glendale Mountain (C4)
A mountain range recedes
into the background at
sunrise or sunset.

This column draws
inspiration from the
mountains that are outside
of the city Glendale, as well
as repeating "blocks" found
in quilting-making
connections to community,
family, belonging, and home.

Patterns are arranged in
sections that recall a
mountain range. When
viewed from up close,
individual elements become
visible. This allow for variety,
unity, and increased impact
when viewed at multiple
distances.

Front and back areas of each column will incorporate variation of the same design.

Not all floral designs need to be included. More variation in selected motifs is possible if this is preferred.

Several distinct designs could be created if more variety is desired.

Positioned in grouping near large field and near seating area. (See map)
Flower columns are often placed near each other, becoming a patterned "wildflower field" for park visitors to enjoy.
