The annual migration of North America's monarch
butterfly is a unique phenomenon, as the
monarch is the only butterfly known to make a
two-way migration. Monarch's cannot survive the
cold winters of northern climates, and travel south
for the winter. Some individuals travel as for as
3,000 miles to reach their winter home! Monarchs
in Western North American overwinter in
California, including around the City of Glendale.

Populations of the iconic black and orange
butterfly has declined over the past twenty years
due to habitat loss, degradation, disease,
pesticides and climate change. This butterfly is a
milkweed butterfly, which means they only lay their
eggs on various species of milkweed on which their
larvae (caterpillars) feed.
California has 15 species of milkweed to support mi-
grating monarch populations. This design
celebrates the unique relationship this butterfly has Monarch larvae on another native species, California milkweed with a native milkweed. (Asclepias californica)

3 B COLLECTIVE
3B Collective, founded in 2016 by Adrian Alfaro,
Alfredo Diaz, Aaron Douglas Estrada, Oscar
Magallanes, and Gustavo Martinez during their
undergraduate years at UCLA, emerged from a
shared vision of uniting artists from diverse Los
Angeles neighborhoods to create impactful

ublic art projects. Since then, the collective
las expanded to include individuals like Alexa
Ramirez and Ruben Ortiz-Torres, broadening
its cultural scope and enabling more ambitious
endeavors.
Inspired by our experiences as children of first-
generation immigrant parents, we deeply value
the storytelling and educational aspects of
murals in our communities. However, we have
Statement also witnessed the erasure and destruction of these murals. With a shared purpose, we aim
to create permanent artworks that honor

Our collective is thrilled about the opportunity to
contribute to the Glendale Public Arts Program,
particularly the Palmer Park Basketball Mural
initiative. Beyond our professional interest, we
hold personal connections with Glendale that
deepen our commitment to this project.
Artistic Practicum
Glendale is woven into our art collective's history.
My first job as a teenager was in Glendale,
shaping my work ethic and fostering a strong
connection to the community. Additionally, my
father dedicated over two decades to Glendale
Community College, making it a central part
of our family's life having fostered life long
friendships.
Glendale
Through our installations, we aim to highlight
ublic art's role in placemaking and enrich the
ives of those in the communities where our
work is located in.
Palmer Park, situated south of downtown Glendale,
serves as a vital community hub. The basketball court
mural project aims to transform this space into a
vibrant artwork that reflects Glendale's multicultural
identity. With a population of over 196,000 residents,
Glendale's rich tapestry of cultures offers a unique
opportunity for a work focused on community
engagement and overlapping cultural motifs.

Concept Sketch Series 04 -
This series reflects a more classic Southern
California landscape direction. It is fairly
straight forward in concept, works in almost
any color variation and has a good sweeping
movement across the court. With or without
the center court logo, this series can vary in
background complexity and color intensity
depending on how bold graphics need to go.
WELCOME TO

Palmer Park
We could make use of a center logo treatment
of some sort. The "Welcome to Glendale Palmer
Park" is a reference back to classic tourist post
cards.

Less "Pyramid of Success" typography and more
hand illustration. Still loose and playful. These
bold graphic elements are fun to view on a large
NATONOU scale. The center "Glendale Palmer Park" logo
has a nice feel. This design could be picked up
and used in promotions as well.
