Subject: La Crescenta Ave bicycle lane project

CAUTION: This email was delivered from the Internet. Do not click links, open attachments, or reply if you are unsure as to the sender.

Dear City Council members,
I received a notice on my business door of the construction to begin in March for this bicycle lane project on La Crescenta Ave., one of the main North-South thoroughfares between Glendale and La Crescenta, La Canada, Sunland and Tujunga.

As a resident, homeowner and business owner for over 30 years in Glendale, I have seen many wildfires in the area that have caused La Crescenta to be jam packed with cars seeking to get to a safe area. I have seen La Crescenta flooded with traffic when the 134 Freeway or 2 freeway north has a bad accident and the freeways are shut down for hours to clear the accident.

Removing one lane on each side of La Crescenta to provide a bike lane in each direction is absurd and dangerous should any emergency or freeway closure or Wild fire occur again and these things will happen again.

What is the purpose of a bike lane when less than one percent of the residents of Glendale ride bicycles?

What happened to government for the Greater Good? It seems this City Council is trying to create more traffic congestion and make it even more dangerous to drive in Glendale.

I do not even go to the Americana or Glendale Galleria due to traffic congestion and insane traffic back-ups.

Why is the City Council forcing this agenda on the residents? This is clearly not for the "Greater Good" of the City of Glendale residents.

The last time I checked Glendale was still in the United States and should adhere to the Abraham Lincoln quote "Of the people, by the people and for the people". Not "I am going to spend millions on a useless project that benefits very few residents"

I do not support this bike lane that will serve a tiny minority in the City of Glendale, create traffic congestion and make emergency evacuations dangerous during Wildfires in our area.

Please rethink this misguided progressive idea that serves a tiny fraction of the population. There needs to be accountability. Who supports this project? Not the majority of Glendale residents.

I drive from my Glendale home to my office Monday through Friday on La Crescenta every day and rarely see a bicyclist. Who is actually benefiting from this multi-million dollar project?

How about using the money to clean up our hillsides and create a Brush Area management department for that purpose and to keep our residents and Homeowners safe from Wildfires. Bring back the Goat herder and his goats to clear the hillsides.

I will not support, not vote for, nor contribute to any campaign of any City Council member that supports this Bike lane project. It is not improving the City of Glendale and in fact making it worse during emergency situations.

Sincerely,
Michael Hilary Gonzalez

Dear Glendale City Council,

I would like to oppose this plan to reduce vehicle lanes in La Crescenta. Our hard earned tax payer dollars, $15 million dollars to be exact, to reconstruct Foothill Blvd. taking away a lane in each direction. Traffic is already difficult as it is! My guess is it's for a bike lane and I don't see any bikes almost everyday. They call this a "Road Diet" in other cities like Santa Monica. They had the same problem but I think the construction was stopped. I don't understand how bikers get so much power. I would urge you to please scrap this plan! Everybody knows traffic in So. Cal. is horrible and it makes no sense to make it even worse.

Your La Crescenta neighbor,
Eric Sauppe

I am an AVID biker, in fact I own 7 of them and ride around Glendale a lot. We do not need to spend MILLIONS in bike lane improvements. We need more law enforcement. Catch the reckless drivers and levy penalties on them. So much speeding and disregard for traffic rules in Glendale is the problem. Let the kids and accompanying adult be able to ride on the sidewalk at low speeds to keep them safe.

I have been working in Real Estate for over 30 yrs. Keep the parking spots on the main thoroughfares.

Elimination of curbside parking and reduced traffic lanes is a death sentence to businesses. I have seen it SOOO MAAANY times. All around USC and Hollywood. Businesses are now struggling because of this.

Sincerely,

M.Selga

To the Mayor and City Council Members
I would like to encourage you to reverse your decision to make La Crescenta Ave one lane of traffic in each direction and keep it at the current two lanes of traffic. Below, I have listed several reasons for keeping La Crescenta Ave a four-lane road, two lanes in each direction.

La Crescenta Ave is a major route for the citizens who live in north Glendale and restricting our roads to one lane will make for angry and agitated drivers. With single dwelling homes being replaced by multi-unit housing, this traffic congestion will only get worse.

If traffic is restricted to just one lane in each direction, motorists will start using the side streets in that area to get around the congestion. This area is a residential area where the roads are not meant to accommodate high traffic.

When we pass another car on these side streets, we must pull over and let each other pass. The city has already proven their concern about traffic in this area by installing five speed bumps on Broadview Avenue.

A major concern would be the safety of the students at Freemont Elementary School located in this residential neighborhood. Currently 589 students attend grades K through 6 and a large percentage of them walk to and from school with their parents or are dropped off and picked up twice a day. This added increase in motor traffic would greatly jeopardize the safety of the students and their parents.

When, not if, the Verdugo Hills in La Crescenta catch fire like Eaton Canyon and Pacific Palisades, Ventura, Santa Barbara recently did, and Santa Rosa and Paradise did within the past few years, and we are told to evacuate immediately, having just one lane to use will cause heavy traffic congestion. Everyone will be in a panic trying to leave the area and with just one accident or car breaking down we will not be able to get to a safe area in a timely manner and serious injury and death will occur just as happened in the above mentioned fires.

The proposed bike lane on La Crescenta is ill advised. The elevation gain in this one and a half mile segment is more than the average person can ride up on their bike and when the bike riders get to the intersection of La Crescenta and Montrose, they will then be required to continue onto streets that have heavy vehicle traffic.

The elevation gain in this mile and a half road is about 250 feet. Most people who bike recreationally do not ride down steep grades and do not check their bikes for good condition of brakes. Bikes cannot down shift like a car so all riders will be freewheeling down La Crescenta Ave. The only way for them to control their speed is to “ride their brakes”. As we all know, riding your brakes down hill is not advisable in a car due to brake fade and being unable to bring your vehicle to a stop at the bottom of a hill. I cannot imagine how many accidents will happen due to bikers riding their bikes down this steep downgrade, using their brakes to control their speed and then the brakes not being able to stop their bikes due to brake fade and flying through signaled intersections or the merging onto Verdugo Road. (I remind you of the truck that crashed into the businesses at the intersection of Angeles Crest and Foothill years ago, and you are correct, he had no business being on that road, but the cause of the accident was still brake fade.) (About 40 years ago, a local church bus loaded with children was coming down the mountain from Lake Arrowhead, the driver “rode the brakes”, got brake fade, crashed and rolled the bus.) At the south end of La Crescenta there is no signal or crosswalk. The road merges with three lanes of traffic on Verdugo Road. There is no traffic light or crosswalk at that junction so bicyclists will be forced to continue on a heavily traveled, downhill, three lane road for another three quarters of a mile before they come to a traffic signal and cross walk to be able to cross over Verdugo Road to Sparr Heights (Glorietta Ave.). Verdugo Road is so dangerous for pedestrians that the city removed the south bound crosswalk at Menlo Drive and Verdugo Road over thirty-five years ago.

Recently, the city council attempted to upgrade North Brand Boulevard with bike lanes, and it failed miserably. I understand that it cost around $800,000 to construct the bike lanes and over $500,000 to change Brand back to its original traffic pattern. My numbers may not be correct but whatever the amount that Brand Boulevard cost, it was our money that you wasted, not yours. From what I understand, around 75% of Glendale residents do not want the city council to reduce our traffic lanes for bike lanes so please stop trying to force this on your constituents.

It is not too late to change the project to remain a four-lane road with two lanes of traffic in each direction after the repair, replacement and upgrades are completed. I am asking you, please, do not congest traffic on La Crescenta Ave more than it is by installing bike lanes in this project.

Sincerely,
Ron Sowers
