General Plan Safety Element Update – Engagement Activity Summary
Activity Overview
The City of Glendale, supported by Rincon Consultants, Inc. (Rincon) organized a booth at two community events: Earth Day and Fire Service Day. The booths included a variety of engaging activities including a raffle and a children’s table. Rincon designed a set of materials to solicit input from the Glendale community on the City’s General Plan Safety Element Update (Safety Element Update) and the policies and programs being considered for inclusion. Materials were also intended to alert the community to similar parallel and supportive planning efforts, including the Climat e Action and Adaptation Plan, as well as updates to additional General Plan elements.
Community members had the option to participate in the engagement process through several avenues:
• A population and demographics survey, collecting information on zip code, residence and work status in Glendale, and language spoken.
• A sign-up sheet for Everbridge to receive project updates. • The “bucket and token” activity, in which participants received three tokens and were asked to vote for three solutions they prioritized in three categories: urban heat, fire hazards, and emergency evacuations.
• An Environmental Justice (EJ) survey produced by De Novo Planning Group to inform the EJ Element Update.
• A raffle to win a prize (tickets were distributed upon completion of activities) for participating in the planning process.
• A children’s coloring table, featuring prompts such as “What do you do on a hot summer day to cool down?” and “What comes to mind when you think of safety?” Figure 1 Activity Booth
