18. CriteriaforInclusiontotheGlendaleRegisterCriterion3MissE. Beaumellewasthearchitect of thishome. Shewasthepresident ofModernAccent CustomHomes. ThisinformationwasobtainedfromtheCityofGlendalebuildingpermit records. Thecompanynameisalsoontheoriginalarchitectural plans, whichwereoriginallyinour possessionbut havebeenmisplaced. At onepoint alocal realtor contactedmefor anyinformationI mighthaveof MissBeaumelleasshewaslistinganother houseof her designintheRoseBowl neighborhoodof Pasadena. That homeincludedsomeof thesamebeautifuldetailingof thishomeincludingMissBeaumelle’sloveof curves. Shewasawomanwhocreated anintelligent timelessdesign. Thishomeisunusual inthatthereisnowastedspace; everysquarefoot isutilized. At thetimeMissBeaumelledesignedthishomefewwomenheldtheprofessional titleof architect.

Our homewouldbeaworthyadditiontotheGlendaleRegister of HistoricResourcesbecauseit sobeautifullyexemplifiestheMid-CenturyModernstyle.Thearchitectureisuniqueinregardsto itsuseof curves. It isanunusual residenceinour immediateneighborhoodbut similar withotherhomesthat wereconstructedduringthesameera, particularlythoselocatedhigherinthehillsin“Sinatraland”or inBeverlyHills“TrousdaleEstate”. It standsout asaprimeexampleof agroundbreakingarchitectural stylethat issosignificant totheheritageof SouthernCalifornia. Therewasincrediblecaretakenincreatingandexecutingthedesign, whichincorporatedmanymaterialsthat werepopular inthe1950’sand60’s, suchasvolcanicgravel, terrazzoandstucco. Thedesignwasclearlyinspiredbythemost important architectsof theday, suchasFrankLloydWright, JohnLautner, andHarryGesner. Particularly, MissBeaumelle’sdesignforour homeechoestheGuggenheimMuseum’scleanuninterruptedcurvaceouslines.

Thenatural shapes, useof light, oversizedwindows, openness, andfamily-friendlylayout arethoroughlyinlinewiththedefinitionof mid-centuryarchitecturaldesign. Thisconcept of bringingtheoutsideinwasoneof themost definingfeaturesof SouthernCaliforniaMidcenturydesign. 1520Cedarhill Roadisatrueworkof art that shouldbepreserved. Our goal asthecurrent ownersistopreservethebeautyanddignityof theoriginal designandmakesurethat futureownersrespect andmaintainit inthesameway. Inaddition, MissBeaumelledeservesrecognitionfor her work, whichacceptanceintotheGlendaleRegister wouldprovide. Our homeisanunqualifiedgemintheJewel City. We’reincrediblyfortunatetohaveenjoyedthishomefor thelast fourteenyearsandwewouldlovetosecureitshistorybyincludingit toGlendale’sHistoricRegistry.
