The nine-story Art Deco tower was designed in 1927 by architect Arthur G. Lindley, who also designed the Alex Theatre and, with his partner Charles R. Selkirk, the Hotel Glendale. It features incised vertical lines, three balconies on the front façade, and irregularly-placed windows on the side façade.

Theme
Period of Significance Property Type Appilicable Criteria The first beginnings of the Masonic Order in Glendale occurred in 1905. On March 15, 1905, Unity Lodge No. 368 was organized by residents with the name ‘Unity’ chosen because membership was almost evenly distributed between Glendale and Tropico.

This structure accommodated all of the Masonic organizations, in cluding Order of the Eastern Star, Royal Arch Masons, Knights of Templar, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Order of de Molay, and the Shrine Club.

The Masonic groups remained as tenants until 1952 when t he Glendale Masonic Temple Association was organized and authorized to purchase property at the southe ast corner of N Maryland and E California. The Temple suffered from the excessive optimism of its planners. Containing five full floors and five par tial floors, the structure sat nearly vacant for almost four decades after the construction of the newer, smaller facility. Historica lly, it represents one of the most ambitious building endeavors in Glendale’s past. In 1992, a live theater company, A Noise Within, found success there and rapidly expanded its use to several floors of the building.
