Dear Goleta City Council members,
I would
like to submit written comment for discussion/action item #22‐070 on the agenda for February 15, 2022.
My name is Melissa Wilkins and I have been a resident of the City of Goleta for 15 years. I am the mother of two boys and am passionate about preventing substance misuse, particularly among adolescents. Over the last year, I have actively advocated for banning the sales of flavored tobacco in the City of Goleta due to the marketing efforts that are geared toward young people and the high number of young people who report using flavored tobacco products. Following the original passage of the Flavored Tobacco Ban, I was one of the many residents who was approached to sign a petition to repeal the ban. Unfortunately, the way this information was communicated was unclear at best and misleading at worst. Unfortunately, the result is that we are now here discussing the possibility of repealing this Ordinance.
I would ask that the Referendum on Ordinance #21‐09 be put to the voters for considering during the next general election on November 8, 2022.
