Subject: Regarding elections (item 22-088) - support Ranked Choice Voting

Dear City Council members,
Given that changes are being made to our election system, I suggest that the City of Goleta should implement Ranked-Choice Voting (also known as Instant-Runoff Voting) in future elections for Mayor and City Council. This system is used successfully in many locations including the California cities of San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, and San Leandro.

For more details, please see https://www.fairvote.org/rcv We have recently watched our neighboring City of Santa Barbara elect a mayor whose views are significantly different from the majority of the residents, because a large portion of the vote was split among three Democratic candidates. The election results would have been much more representative if Santa Barbara had used Ranked-Choice Voting.

Sincerely,
Brett Garrett
