Subject: September 6 Agenda Item B9
My name is Christina Bennett and I’m a constituent residing in zip code 93111 and I urge you to support agenda item B9; the city resolution to support Proposition 1.
More than 20 states have enacted laws used to ban or severely restrict abortion access. This means nearly half of all women of reproductive age — 36 million women could lose access to safe, legal abortion in the United States and often with no exemptions.
We are in a crisis moment for reproductive healthcare access. This is the culmination of anti-abortion politicians with decades-long plans to outlaw abortion. We’ve already gotten a preview of the harm these types of laws can do with Texas’s S.B. 8, a radical bill banning abortion at approximately six weeks — a time when most women don’t even know they’re pregnant yet. This abhorrent ruling has left more than 7 million women of reproductive age — 10% of U.S. women of reproductive age — living where abortion is virtually inaccessible.
Abortion restrictions already harm Black, Latin, and Indigenous people most, and these communities, communities like Goleta which is nearly 34% Hispanic, stand to lose the most without protection like Proposition 1.
Supporting Proposition 1 is crucial because no one's most personal medical decisions should be controlled by politicians, neighbors, complete strangers, or anyone else. Every person should be able to make their own decisions about their health and their lives, including abortion.
It is time to support abortion access in all communities and to support policies that increase access to abortion, rather than decimating people’s most basic rights state by state.
Thank you for your time,
Christina Bennett

Subject: Agenda item B9 / Proposition 1 resolution
Dear Mayor Perotte and City Council members:
I am writing to urge our Goleta City Council to pass a resolution in support of Proposition 1. This proposition would explicitly protect the right to abortion and birth control by amending the California state constitution. California must continue to be a leader in supporting women’s rights and and access to full health care. Please show voters in our state that Goleta supports the rights of women and families.
Sincerely,
Carter Morgan

Comment to agenda item B9: California needs to ensure that all folks, continue to have access to safe and legal abortion! Having an abortion is a choice that each person should decide on their own. After only a few months since the Supreme Court decision to strike essential health care, we’ve seen the impact that this has caused in the lives of so many, specially for minorities.
I support CA state constitution ensuring that we have access to abortion and birth control.
Yes on prop 1!
Thank you

Thank you for voting for Prop 1.
Everyone should have the power to control their own bodies, lives, and futures. Together we have the power to amend California’s state constitution to explicitly protect the right to abortion and birth control.

Subject: Support for Agenda Item B9 Resolution Supporting Prop 1
Hello,
My name is Angie Swanson-Kyriaco and I am a 12-year resident of Goleta. I am in support of the City’s resolution supporting Proposition 1 (agenda item B9). It is imperative that all individuals have the right to bodily autonomy and access to birth control (or to refuse birth control) and abortion care. The fundamental right for people to control their own bodies must be protected and codified into California’s constitution.
Every person with the capacity to become pregnant deserves to have their rights protected.
Sincerely,
Angie Swanson-Kyriaco, MA (she/her)

RE: Agenda for September 6, Item B.9
Dear Mayor Perotte and Councilmembers:
The League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara and the League of Women Voters of California support Agenda Item B.9, 22-398 Proposition 1—Constitutional Right to Reproductive Freedom.
The League of Women Voters of California and the League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara support the constitutional right of privacy of the individual to make reproductive choices.
The League of Women Voters of California states:
“A recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court held that the U.S. Constitution does not protect the right to abortion. While access to abortion is no longer federally protected and is under attack across the country, we can safeguard access in California. Proposition 1 will amend the California Constitution to enshrine the fundamental right to choose an abortion, use or refuse contraceptives (birth control), and make individual decisions on reproductive health. These rights are consistent with existing state laws and our state constitutional rights to privacy and equal protection. Access to affordable, comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion, allows people to plan their lives, protect their health, and achieve their dreams. Prop 1 protects access to the care that will give individuals and families the freedom to make those choices.”
We are pleased that the Goleta City Council is considering supporting this proposition and urge you to adopt it.
Sincerely,
Vicki P. Allen

Subject: Support item B.9, Resolution to support Prop 1
Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
I am writing in support of Consent Agenda Item B.9, which is the Resolution Supporting Prop 1 on the November ballot.
The majority of Goleta residents support access to safe and legal abortion and reproductive justice, which includes the basic human right to choose if, when, and how to create a family.
Our residents' fundamental rights deserve protection. In addition, our city includes a hospital and many medical providers that advise patients on contraception, fertility, abortion, pregnancy, miscarriage, sexually transmitted infections, and more.
I am a former Board Member of Law Students for Choice (currently known as If, When, How), a longtime Planned Parenthood supporter (intern/clinic escort/donor/etc), an attorney who has represented survivors of intimate partner violence, and the stepchild of a retired OBGYN. I strongly urge your support of this resolution.
Sincerely,
Jennifer R. Smith
