SUBJECT: Selection of Mayor Pro Tempore
RECOMMENDATION:
Select a Mayor Pro Tempore from among the members of the City Council.
BACKGROUND:
Resolution No.05-58 establishes a procedure for the City Council to select the Mayor Pro Tempore annually from among its members at the first meeting in December . The Mayor Prop Tempore then serves at the pleasure o f the City Council until a new Mayor Pro Tempore is selected and assumes office.
On January 17, 2012, the City Council elected to be come the Successor Agency to the Redevelopment Agency for the City of Goleta Pursuant to Part 1.85 of Division 24 of the California Health and Saf ety Code . The Mayor serves as the Chair of the Successor Agency. Consistent with Council policy regarding the f ormer Redevelopment Agency, staff recommends that the Mayor Pro Tempore also serve as the Vice Chair of the Agency.
DISCUSSION:
Consistent with Resolution 05-58, the City Council has the opportunity t o entertain nominations and select a Mayor Pro Temp ore to serve until the first meeting in December 2023.
The process for selecting the Mayor Pro Tempore is as follows:
The City Clerk opens the nomination period to the City Council for the nomination of candidates for Mayor Pro Tempore. Nominations do not require a second prior to a vote.
The City Clerk asks if there are any other nominations. The City Clerk closes nomination period.
The City Clerk takes a roll call of nominations in the order r eceived until a Mayor Pro Tempore is appointed.
