Subject: Re: For Tomorrow's Grant Funding Review Standing Committee Meeting Here’s what I’d feel comfortable with sharing more broadly. Thanks Shanna! Here are my thoughts in no particular order. Please also know that anytime I am in the minority as far as how much or how little $, I will be fine with going with the majority (or the average). :
Ice in Paradise - I’m in favor of giving them at least $4k (and possibly more). Given that I now know they are a non-profit, and heard some compelling comments from Ms. Ono, I am even more inclined to provide a substantial grant to keep them moving forward so that they can expand opportunities for all community members to participate. I also understand that my perspective on this is limited, given my lack of history with the Council, the Grant Committee and Ice in Paradise.
Storyteller Children’s Center - I recommended $4K because their only 2 locations are in downtown Santa Barbara. I would be reluctant to increase this amount (but not entirely opposed to it).
Mental Health Assoc SB County - I recommended $4K but would be reluctant to go lower.
We are unfortunately seeing more and more cases of mental health crises with our youth.
Here’s an important article regarding this: https://grownandflown.com/high-school-collegemental-health/? fbclid=IwAR2d9g4KcHSlFGxPdaBLbC0Cp1ubdWB26wyqh6EPzRkafzgIj92n6ZMPbks Goleta Valley Historical Society - I recommended $6K but could easily move to $4K or $5k, or any variation in that area
Page Youth Center - I recommended $3K and would not want to go any lower than that given the numbers of young people who are served.
Rotary Club of Goleta Noontime - I recommended $4K because school supplies are so expensive and having an appropriate backpack can not only cause less wear and tear on the wearer, but reduce grief/harassment for any student who does not appear to have a newer “cool” backpack. I could go less but prefer not to.
Explore Ecology - I recommended $2500 and am fine reducing that to $2000 if needed Santa Barbara Partners in Education - I recommended $4000 and am fine reducing if needed United Boys & Girls Clubs - I recommended $10,000, my highest rec amount. I could go a little lower but there is so much “bang for the buck” with this group.
Girls, Inc. - I recommended $7500. Again a lot of bang for the buck. I’m ok they’re not technically in Goleta. They serve our Goleta females.
Channel Islands YMCA - I recommended $5k. I was the only committee member who supported this org in the earlier grant cycle and still feel strongly about supporting them this time.
Orgs I’d propose get any additional funds:
1. Mental Health Assoc SB County - HUGE need
2. Page Youth Center - great space for kids
3. AHA - serves a lot of students of color
4. Center for Successful Aging
5. Rotary Club - Senior Assistance
6. STESA - great and essential service
7. Ice in Paradise
I’ll hop on the call a little after 4:00 tomorrow.
I hope these help!
Thank you Shanna for all your help!

Hi Mr. Croyle,
For tomorrow’s meeting, since you’ll have to miss the first part, I wanted you to have the spreadsheet we worked on today that had the “granted” amounts (I know they’re not set in stone yet). If I can provide anything else that might be helpful to you, or if you want to send some comments in for me to read during tomorrow’s meeting, I’m more than happy to do so.
Thank you!
