Interests & Experiences
Question applies to multiple boards
Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I identified the eucalyptus trees' health issues in our Grove and created the spark to pursue professional attention for the problem. I am interested in the problems presented in our area, an area that has many small parks that are not apparent to the community. I would like to see our trees cared for and continue to be a high point of our community.

Question applies to multiple boards
Describe your qualifications, experience, and education, and list any technical or professional requirements you have relative to the duties of the board, commission or committee to which you are applying.

I have had an interest in horticulture since childhood and have pursued it as a hobby but mostly as an observer, I do not have large yard, other than the eucalyptus grove I share with my neighbors. My skill as an editor might be useful when discussing signage or publicity for parks. I have experience working with Goleta Valley Historical Society (GVHS). I believe outdoor spaces are essential to a strong and healthy community. Unfortunately I do not have much experience serving on a City Public advisory role, and have much to learn.

Question applies to multiple boards
Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I love trees! As a Realtor and long-time environmentalist, I understand how important trees are to our community, to the environment, and to property values. I would love the opportunity to serve Goleta in this capacity.

Question applies to multiple boards
Describe your qualifications, experience, and education, and list any technical or professional requirements you have relative to the duties of the board, commission or committee to which you are applying.

I successfully coordinated a street-tree group when I lived in Santa Barbara to save the trees on the 700 block of Fellowship Road that were slated to be cut down and replaced with smaller trees (the trees are still there 12 years later!). I wrote letters, went door-to-door, and coordinated a meeting with the city arborist to educate neighbors. This process required much research.

Question applies to multiple boards
What are your goals in serving on the board, commission, or committee to which you are applying?
I'd like to contribute to the beauty of Goleta, work with others in a common goal, and help Goleta trees thrive.

Question applies to multiple boards
Have you obtained any memberships in professional organizations? I am a member of the National Association of Realtors, the California Association of Realtors, and a licensed real estate agent.

Question applies to Public Tree Advisory Commission
List your relevant experience as it relates to your experience in urban forestry or landscaping.

See answer above about saving the trees on my former street. Significant research was involved in that.

I've also designed sustainable landscapes for myself and others, and met with professional arborists during the course of my work. Most significant to this committee is my work as board president of The Meadows HOA in Goleta to create a scope of work, interview, hire, and follow up with engaging an arborist to survey all the trees in that community. We had to convince homeowners of the importance of having a tree assessment and management plan, get the full board to approve it, and I followed up during my term to make sure the plan was followed. We created a maintenance schedule and worked to ensure the health of 434 trees on that property. I've also read The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, which significantly broadened my understanding of trees and their ecosystems.

Question applies to multiple boards
What civic and/or volunteer activities have you participated in? You may include past or present activities.

Board and committee membership as noted above. I've done a lot of volunteer work over my 36 years in this area, including things like producing the newsletter for Surfrider, stenciling storm drains, going to hearings for animal welfare, and helping get the dangerous dog ordinance changed in Goleta.

Question applies to multiple boards
Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Because as a homeowner in Goleta I have dealt with the current policy of not being allowed to remove and replace a hazardous liquidambar tree in front of our house at my own expense.

Question applies to multiple boards
Describe your qualifications, experience, and education, and list any technical or professional requirements you have relative to the duties of the board, commission or committee to which you are applying.

I have a PhD in education, worked in non-profit and government agencies for 40 years, and am familiar with government policy and decision making processes. I have testified about various health issues before the Goleta, Santa Barbara, Carpinteria and other city councils, the County board of supervisors, and other groups. As a 43 year city resident I have witnessed the hazards, injuries, and destruction of sidewalks and streets caused by liquidambar trees.

Question applies to multiple boards
What are your goals in serving on the board, commission, or committee to which you are applying?
To create a rational, safe, and cost-effective city policy that allows the removal and replacement of liquidambar trees with less hazardous and destructive ones. Our 80 year old neighbor was blinded in one eye when she slipped on a liquidambar fruit ball and fell while walking around the block. I and many others have slipped on these hazardous balls. A local young man confined to a wheelchair struggles to get through patches of the balls. When I contacted the Goleta Public Works department and offered to pay to remove the tree in front of our house and replace it with a ginko tree as many of our neighbors have done, my request was denied because the tree "does not pose a threat to pubic health and safety." As a past County Public Health manager and local resident this is clearly not accurate. Further, I was told that I was liable for anyone getting injured by the balls on the public sidewalk in front of my home, although I was not allowed to address the source of the problem. I was also told that the committee to review an appeal didn't have enough members to address the issue. This was two years ago and apparently the committee still doesn't have enough members. As a nature lover, avid walker, and long-term Goleta resident I would be happy to help address other tree related issues. I suggest that this committee be merged with another broader committee that addresses other pedestrian issues because the sidewalk damage done by some trees is a separate but related issue. The absence of sidewalks in many Goleta neighborhoods is another safety issue.

Question applies to multiple boards
Have you obtained any memberships in professional organizations? I have chaired multiple County Public Health committees, educational committees (Goleta School Site Councils), and served on one non-profit agency board of directors.

“from the Stones to the drones”

Abe Peck enjoys a productive career as both media educator and professional. His specialty is magazines—he calls himself a “Magazine Chiropractor” because he aligns different media around the immersiveness, innovation and audience experiences that support the form’s evolution. He also works with digital, newspaper and other media.

Medill School of Journalism/Northwestern University: Abe served with distinction during 27 years as a full- time professor at the school (www.medill.northwestern.edu). He was awarded Medill’s first and second named chairs; served as magazine program chair, acting and associate dean; and taught magazine writing, magazine editing, arts reporting and the cross-media introductory methods course. He also was launch director of the four-university National Arts Journalism Program. But he’s most associated with the magazine publishing project, an inductive “deep dive” that launched titles as instructional tools, with five prototypes going on to commercial publication.

Today, Abe contributes as a professor emeritus in service. As the school’s first director of business-to-business (B2B) communication, he supervises professional fellowships and programs, including bringing McAllister Top Managers and McAllister Top Editors to campus and students. He created and teaches “Inside B2B Media,” in which students “consult” to publishers on evolving media opportunities. Recent projects have included a LinkedIn-driven circulation effort for Crain Communications, an audience-based new product for EPG Specialty Media’s Powersports Group, a social media exploration for Modern Salon, a print reposition for Penton/Informa restaurant and supermarket titles and a live-tweet trade show campaign for Inside Unmanned Systems.

Abe has helped hundreds of Medill graduates secure employment. He co-launched the Israel-Palestinian Medill Explorers experience. Recent curation/moderating include a 2021 panel on sustainable travel and Medill’s “1968 Democratic Convention and the Media” panel series, parts of which were televised nationally.

Professionally, Abe has run his own consulting business for many years, working with C-suite executives and journalists alike. Engaging both B2B and consumer titles, and in corporate communications trainings, he specializes in editorial brand development and portfolio expansion, strategic content performance reviews, vision and mission statements, cross-media positioning and architecture, ethics, feature writing, and writing/ editing coaching. Abe has engaged with more than 100 B2B and consumer magazines, websites, portals and newspapers, from Pacific Standard and Spin to Highlights for Children and the American Hospital Association. He has consulted to /led workshops for Access Intelligence, Advanstar, American Dental Association, Autonomous, Babcox, Crain (ethics), Healthcare Financial Management Association, Lippincott/Wolters Kluwer, Nielsen, Putman, Reed and Vance. He hosted a multiplatform strategic planning retreat at his home for top staff from Vincentz (Hannover, Germany). He is a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors and serves on the board of the ASBPE Foundation, which encourages the next generation of business-to-business content creators.

In January 2019, Abe became executive editor of Inside Unmanned Systems and advisory editor of Inside GNSS, which cover autonomous vehicles and satellite navigation. He was responsible for cross-platform strategy and issue planning, issue editing and feature writing across platforms. He was involved in launching a new brand in this space. In late 2022, Abe became an editor at large, writing on topics from from autonomous inspection to carbon monitoring via drones.

Internationally, Abe has lectured in China on apps, branding and brand circles, digital disruption, media experiences and tomorrow’s staff. He has worked with professionals at Peking University, with a roster of companies that includes 21st Century Media, BPA Worldwide media auditors, Cosmo Holdings, Nanfang, Rayli, Shenzhen and Viva, and with Chinese journalists, students and officials, including for the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) and Journalism Education Association-China.

He also has consulted/lectured in Ecuador (Society of American Travel Writers), Finland, Hong Kong (Global Sources, Questex), India (Hindustan Times), Malaysia (Malaysian Publishers Assoc.), the Philippines (Asian NGO, Global Sources), Qatar (Abode, Qatar Happenings) and the U.K. (Advanstar), and has reported from France, Hong Kong, Mexico, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa and Tibet. He’s guest-lectured at Northwestern’s campus in Doha, Qatar, and at Fudan University (Shanghai), the Great Lakes School of Management (Chennai, India) and the University of the Philippines (Quezon City).

Launch consulting has included advising to adventure travel, city, outdoor, pharmaceutical and security titles. Abe was on the founding committee of Mission & State, which encouraged accountability reporting in Santa Barbara and received a half-million-dollar grant from the Knight Foundation and local matching support. He was on the editorial 39 board of the Social Justice Foundation, which published the National Magazine Award-winning Pacific Standard.

He is an advisory director for Media Advisory Partners, an investment-banking firm that acquires and mentors media properties facing disruptive innovation (www.mediaadvisorypartners.com).

Abe’s writing/editing has occurred as a contributing editor with Travel Weekly, an associate/contributing editor with Rolling Stone, consulting editor for Outside and contributing editor to Satisfaction, a Tribune Company magazine for baby boomers first launched in Medill’s student publishing program under his supervision. He has written for titles from Esquire, GQ and Town & Country to Folio: to The Rotarian, The Santa Barbara Independent, Logosjournal.com and MSNBC.com.

He was a critic at large on WBBM-AM, Chicago, and a featured freelance rock music writer for the Associated Press.

Corporate clients have included Abbott, Eaton, Goldman Sachs, International Paper, Microsoft, the National Investors Relations Institute and Tellabs. Abe has worked with Academe and CASE on educational issues. He has led seminars on magazine start-ups for Folio: and the Western Publishing Association; as noted, he is a longtime program partner with Connectiv and its executive management seminars.

Current lecture topics include:
 Audience experiences/media engagement B2B: Print and beyond Content audit/brand circles  Cross-platform branding Ethics Feature writing
 Jobs in media; freelancing Macro forces on media Magazines today and tomorrow  Media launches Social media Staffing for content excellence  Tomorrow’s editor Travel writing Vision, mission, values

He has judged/organized contests for the Society of American Travel Writers, Advanstar, Allured, Lebhar-Friedman and Meredith.

Once editor of the Chicago Seed, Abe drew on his experience to write Uncovering the ‘60s: The Life and Times of the Underground Press (Pantheon/Carol), which The New York Times and others have called the genre’s “definitive” history. Allied work includes the foreword for Voices from the Underground (Incredible Librarian) and the radical-press entry for the History of Mass Media in the U.S. (Routeledge). He co-edited and wrote in Medill on Media Engagement (Hampton), edited Dancing Madness (Rolling Stone/Doubleday) and consulted on Rolling Stone’s History of the ‘60s (Random House). He contributed to The Eighties: A Look Back, The Experts Speak, The World Book Encyclopedia (“magazines”) and Trade, Industrial & Professional Periodicals of the United States. His chapter on the specialized business press appeared in The Routeledge Handbook of Magazine Research: The Future of the Magazine Form. His book reviews have run in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Progressive and logosjournnal.com.

Academic management has included directorships; interim and associate deanships; and chairmanships of journalism and storytelling, magazine publishing and strategic planning committees. With other administrators, Abe has raised nearly $25 million dollars to fund the complexities of contemporary journalism education.

As a director of Medill’s Media Management Center, Abe generated the MMC-ABM executive leadership program, which won rave reviews for enriching the perspectives of the new generation of B2B leaders. Through MMC, Abe conducted landmark research on “reader experiences” of various media, which fueled the Medill media engagement book. He also studied the dearth of corporate digital training with ASBPE, the business-to-business content group, delivered the group’s keynote address in 2019 and received its certificate for “Best Practices for Editorial Involvement in B2B Events Planning.”

Abe oversaw a multi-million-dollar budget as the first director of the National Arts Journalism Program (Pew Foundation), which was based at Northwestern, Columbia, USC and Georgia.

Education and honors: Abe received a BA in History from New York University, did graduate work at the City University of New York and earned a certificate from the Advanced Executive Program of the Media Management Center. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Abe was the first Medill professor to be awarded an endowed chair (Sills Professorship) and the first to receive a second endowed chair (Helen Gurley Brown Professorship). He was Educator of the Year of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s magazine division, is in the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame and holds a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Business Press Editors. In 2022, he and his magazine team won a Jesse Neal Award for a “Science and Research” issue. As a reporter/editor/columnist for Chicago’s Daily News and Sun-Times, he won two Illinois Associated Press awards. He is listed in Who's Who in the 40 World, America, Education, Finance and Business, Jewry, Media and Communications and Midwest. He is a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors.

Abe’s wife, Suzanne, is a communications consultant and recently termed out as a member of the Santa Barbara Commission on Women. She co-wrote and co-directed Pass the Mic, which is designed to satisfy the State of California mandate for education in sexual health, wrote/directed the book/video Stand Tall: Lessons to Teach Respect and Prevent Bullying (Corwin), co-authored Ruff, a get-going parable on change management (Blue Point). One son is an award- winning musical director based in Los Angeles; the other is director of client services for o3mdm, a digital marketing firm in Chennai, India.

Abe studies tai chi at the Lau Kune Do (“Way of the Flowing Fist”) temple, and he has been named “(co-) Instructor of the Year,” “Student of the Year” and a “Special Student.” He sings doo-wop (’50-‘60s vocals) and is an honorary member of the Doo Wop Hall of Fame. He served on the Goleta, California, Library Advisory Commission and is a member of PFLAG Santa Barbara. He has traveled to 50 countries and territories and is interested in world politics— and, of course, in exploring magazine media across their ever-expanding formats. 41 Attachment 7
