Dear Mayor Perotte and Council:
First, I have throughout my adult life been openly supportive of full civil rights for gay/lesbian/bisexual individuals, including the right to marry and have a family. I also believe it appropriate to mark June 28th as a solemn anniversary date, the Stonewall protests.
However, there is a distinction between L,G, and B rights, and those recognizing transgenderism. I specifically refer to the following section of the resolution to be approved this Tuesday:
“. . . [T]ransgender individuals and youth, face disproportionately high risks of violent hate crimes, suicide, homelessness, bullying, and mental health problems.”
The statement is false. First, transgenderism as a medical condition is extremely rare, especially among females. Furthermore, there is clear evidence that the mental health problems attendant with transgenderism are more often than not, the result of other issues in the individual’s life. This also includes higher rates of autism within that population than one would expect. The switch to the opposite sex does not resolve those pre-existing mental conditions, including predisposition to suicide.
In fact, it exacerbates them.
But most important for me, as a feminist, is the direct assault on female civil rights and protections under the law. No other marginalized group has ever shredded the civil rights of the majority: including blacks (1964) and the disabled (1990). Their attainment of full civil rights was a recognition of their rights under the Constitution. As a people, we celebrate and honor their rightful attainment of civil rights.
Women and girls are currently being pushed aside. In sports. In the locker rooms and dormitories. In prisons where the females have no recourse locked inside a cell with a biological male. In honors and awards. Historically, females are the prey to the male predator. This is true throughout history. It remains true today. Without the law, women and girls are again vulnerable and disadvantaged and placed in danger with NO RECOURSE.
In the case of youth, most children and teens will find their way through “gender confusion” and settle onto their biological sex – the DNA designation imprinted upon conception, even before the zygote is implanted into the womb. Some among that group will come to realize that they are gay. Others not.
But either way, they will mature to love their God-given body. Gay men are first and foremost, MEN.
Lesbians are WOMEN.
Currently, women are being bullied, silenced, beaten, threatened with loss of careers (especially in Athletics), and yes – raped. All because we dare to claim what is true: We are women. No man can ever be a woman.
I respectfully request that you remove that paragraph from your resolution.

To City Council,
Thank you for recognizing the month of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month! I am sure you will be getting negative feedback and want you to know that many of us out in the community support your decision.

Dear Mayor and members of the city Council of Goleta,
I am writing this to voice my objection to the City of Goleta making a proclamation recognizing June 2023, as LGBTQ plus pride month and I implore you to strike this item from the agenda as it is NOT city business, it is a political and activist driven issue, and to eliminate it as an item to be brought up in the future city business.
As our mayor and city Council, you were elected, by we the people, to represent all of us, to guard the safety and well being of all of our residents, and to maintain the roads and infrastructure of our city Not to weigh in on, recognize or sanction particular political causes or groups. That is not your place.
By putting this proclamation of recognition formally on the city’s agenda, formally voting on it and ultimately entering it into the books of the city, you are ostracizing a huge number of this residents of the city.
Granted, this is a political issue that has been addressed for years, and ultimately given recognition by the federal government, that should be enough. But for any city to recognize a particular group of people, albeit a very small percentage of the population, whose sexual preferences do not reflect those of the vast majority of the population, and to display the symbols of that small minority for that particular group on city property, or as part of the city governance, steps out of bounds.
I believe it is fine if a particular group of people want to live a particular way, and we should let them.
But I strongly object to our Mayor and City Council, spending time and our taxpayer money on picking and choosing and sanctioning and recognizing particular groups. By doing so, it then begs the question, what groups will you not recognize? I find it sad that you have felt compelled to cave-in to the pressure from a few loud voices.
I find it very troubling that the city feels that it is within their purview to display pride flags, it is not your place. Additionally, by doing so, you offend people with other beliefs and you have forced people with children to have to address things that they may not be prepared to discuss with her children yet. It is one thing for parents to discuss sexual issues with their children, but it is another thing when the city displays symbols of a particular groups sexuality.
Lastly, with a formal proclamation and recognition by the city, you open the door for the sexual preferences of a fringe group to be included in our city library's, our City Hall, our community center and our schools. As you well know, city councils, and school systems across the county are being sued by their citizens, and I think it best that the city of Goleta abandon this agenda.
Again, I implore you to drop this proclamation of recognition from your agenda, and no longer address it from our city chambers., It is not your place to do. Stick to the job you have, surely there is enough to attend to and plenty to get done.
Respectfully yours,
Jeff (and Loralyn) Wayco
