I currently volunteer weekly at the nonprofit equine therapy riding stable, Hearts Therapeutic, to help care for the horses. I intermittently volunteer for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County in warehouse pre- packs, orchard gleans, and food delivery. When I first moved here, I volunteered in a research lab at UCSB to help supervise undergraduate interns, collect and clean data on wildflower characteristics that could affect resilience in changing climates, and lead a weekly discussion group for undergraduate interns on relevant published articles. When I lived in Colorado, I volunteered on a Stream Team that collected monthly water samples in montane watersheds. I also volunteered at the University of Colorado greenhouse to help maintain the plant collection.

Question applies to Historic Preservation Commission
Describe your qualifications, interest, education, and/or knowledge regarding Historic Preservation of buildings and structures and /or the preservation of Archaeological and Tribal Cultural Resources?
My background and passion are in history. I am trained as a historian. I earned my Ph.D. from the Department of History at UC Berkeley in 2018 and have continued with academic research, writing, and translation in the years since. I have extensive experience doing the work of history as a student, educator, and administrator and am intimately familiar with the significance of historic preservation and public history, as well as what they can mean for a community, from preserving structures to building civic connections. In particular, I have a deep appreciation for the role community organizations play in protecting the tangible pieces of our history and the opportunity thereby created for the public to access that past. I have built on my education through my work as a public historian and humanist as Assistant Director at the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center at UC Santa Barbara, where I design and run programs that engage communities in the humanities. For instance, I led the Making of Monuments project this summer, facilitating the creation of lessons for elementary school students around questions of history, memory, and representation, organized around a statue of Carlos III located at the Santa Barbara Presidio through collaboration with our community partners: the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, educators from the Santa Barbara Unified School District, and UCSB Public History graduate students. This publicly engaged work has helped me build on my formal training with practical experience and helped me acquire new knowledge by working with and as a part of local communities. I am eager to get more involved in the civic processes of my Goleta community and would be honored to lend any help I can to the Commission.

Question applies to Historic Preservation Commission
What do you believe to be the role of the Historic Preservation Commission? I believe that the role of the Historic Preservation Commission is to be the steward of our community’s history. Specifically, the Commission should preserve culturally and historically significant structures, sites, and other tangible pieces of Goleta’s past from the prehistoric to the present that, if damaged, destroyed, or otherwise altered, cannot be replaced. The Commission must place a special emphasis on protecting Indigenous cultural artifacts and other historical resources, both extant and those undiscovered; close partnership and collaboration with Indigenous communities will be essential to accomplish this work. Finally, the Commission should do as much as reasonably possible to preserve and expand public access to these sites and objects, enhancing everyone’s ability to appreciate that things that have made Goleta a special place.

Question applies to Historic Preservation Commission
Why should be you be appointed to the Historic Preservation Commission ? I would bring a unique combination of historical training, public history experience, and passion for community engagement to the Commission. I have a strong desire to learn more about my adopted hometown’s history and help contribute to its future, and I would relish the opportunity to help steward our community’s historical legacies.
