BACKG
ROUND:

he City of Santa Barbara is currently recruiting to fill two positions currently held by Craig Arcuri and Cassandra Reed whose terms will expire on December 31, 2024. The recruitment closes at 5:00 p.m. on September 25, 2024.
Th
e City of Santa Barbara Airport Commission (Airport Commission) is a seven member body with four year terms . The general function of the Airport Commission is to a dvise Santa Barbara City Council regarding the selection and appointment of an Airport Director; t erms and conditions of leases, contracts and agreements pertaining to operation of the Airport ; rules and regulations related to operation, and maintenance of the Airport, including the fixing of rates and charges related to operation of the Airport ; and preparation of development plans, financial plans, and budget for the Airport.

he qualifications are as follows:
• Four members must be qualified electors of the City of Santa Barbara. • Three members may be City or County residents.

The Commission meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 P.M. in the Airport Administration Conference Room, 601 Firestone Road. The time involved for this commission is approximately three (3) – four (4) hours per month for meetings and related activities. Time commitment may vary depending on voluntary participation on subcommittees.

he Goleta City Council has the opportunity to interview and endorse an applicant (s) to serve on the Airport Commission for consideration by the Santa Barbara City Council.

While I was on the Airport Commission I was Chair of the Noise Abatement Sub-committee. I believe that as a Goleta resident I can help resolve some of the issues between the City of Santa Barbara and the City of Goleta.

Recently I learned of open positions to serve on the City of Santa Barbaras Airport Commission. As a resident
of Goleta, I am applying to be considered as a designee on the commission from the City of Goleta.
In 2023, I retired from thirty-five years in public education.
Within a month of retirement, I was accepted into
the docent training program at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Now a docent with the museum, I continue to
seek out ways my professional expertise can contribute to our communities.
Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is vital to the local economy and beneficial to residents and businesses. The
operation of SBA reflects our community, its history, and charm.
As a commissioner, when making
recommendations to the Santa Barbara City Council I would:
listen to technical advisors, carrier representatives, staff, residents and community partners,
review plans, procedures, rules and regulations and,
ensure safety, operation, maintenance, and fiscal
accountability are priorities.
Although my technical expertise is not in aviation, my
experience in serving on and facilitating public
committees and advisory groups allows me to easily transition into the process.
To illustrate, my background is not in arts or arts education.
However, in less than one year, I have been
recognized as one of the most effective docents at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. When asked how I was
able to develop expertise, I explained that as an educator we deconstruct content and reconstruct it for
exploration, application, and comprehension.
I feel I can add interesting insight to the collaborative conversations and equitably apply the functions of the
Santa Barbara Airport Commission.

I believe that the Santa Barbara airport is the best airport in the United States. And, Goleta is such an incredible place to live and work. I would serve with pride as the representative of this special city on the airport commission.
