Hello City Clerk Group:

I moved to Goleta in 1963 shopping at the Santa Cruz Market when bacon was 29¢/lb. I have seen many changes over the following decades. Some beneficial and some as unfortunately necessary as the population boomed. I am astonished that the city is considering Back-in Angled Parking elsewhere besides Hollister Avenue. I no longer feel safe shopping in Old Town. On my last four trips to shop, I was almost hit by drivers three of those times. They cut behind as one attempts to back in, they cut across oncoming traffic to nose in (and then back out into traffic).

My neighbor (who is more perplexed at the scheme than I) believes the city wants to “modernize Hollister and bring the city into the 21
st century.” She feels more tax dollars are
generated from franchises and other modern marketing methods differing from the locally owned, and operated, businesses. She says new paint should help in that goal… out with the old, and in with the new.

Should that be a motivation, I am saddened at the homogenization of Goleta retail. More like the rest of southern California all the time.

In any case, Back-in Angled Parking is dangerous and should be eliminated just as the City of Santa Barbara did in the early 1960s.

Thank you,
Jeff Kruthers
