The recent events at Ralph's in Magnolia Shopping Center compels me to send this email. A homeless individual attacked another person with a knife and was shot dead as a result. A tragedy that effects our entire community. The homeless individuals that park along Phelps Road present a similar situation. It is only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs in this area too. I do not want the council to be able to say they were not warned and were not aware. I am telling you it will happen unless you, the council, take immediate steps to remove these individuals and to prevent them from returning. We cannot wait for another round of endless council meeting discussions and public input. Currently the residents of this area, especially the wives and daughters, are afraid to go out at night in their own neighborhood. I would think that at least Ms. Perotte, Ms. Smith, and Ms. Reyes-Martin would place an emphasis on their plight.
Living in cars and on the streets is no way for a human being to live. But many will choose this if you continue to make this an option that they can select. The misplaced compassion of not removing this option allows this situation to go unresolved. We, the residents, have been asking and pleading with the council for almost two years now with no results. It is not something the council should look on with pride.
