Question applies to multiple boards
Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am generally motivated to serve on city commissions because it is my passion, it is in my nature, it is my duty as a citizen to be civically engaged, and I believe everyone should participate beyond basic expectations because if we lack active involvement in governance, there will be no effective governance to sustain us. My community is important to me, and I enjoy dedicating my time to activities that make it better. In addition, I am creative, I enjoy researching and analyzing new and established ideas to create or improve things, and I would be honored to contribute these skills to this committee for the benefit of our great city.
Question applies to multiple boards
Describe your qualifications, experience, and education, and list any technical or professional requirements you have relative to the duties of the board, commission or committee to which you are applying.
My qualifications include leadership experience running a school club focused on business, volunteering, and community outreach, which involves extensive communication and various types of outreach to promote our mission effectively. Previously, I interned with Future Leaders of America as a volunteer organizer, a valuable first experience where I designed flyers to share information, gathered volunteer interests via text, discussed policy and voting with others, tabled frequently, and attended rallies. Currently, I serve on the Isla Vista Food Coop Board of Directors, study political science at Santa Barbara City College, and participate in SB Lived Experience Advisory Board, all of which have strengthened my technical skills in and commitment to community service and public engagement. arielle goodson

I have noticed that although Goleta is a relatively new city, its willpower, heart, and can-do spirit inspire me, and that is why I want to contribute to this community and get things done. I enjoy connecting with residents, attending events, and volunteering here. Even as a new resident of nearly two years, I am committed to giving back, knowing I will stay for years to come, and I want to encourage others to get involved for generations ahead

Question applies to multiple boards
Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am a proud new resident of Goleta, though I’ve called Santa Barbara County home for the past 30 years, living in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, and now Goleta. Throughout that time, I’ve been deeply engaged in our community—serving on city boards and commissions, as well as nonprofit boards and committees. Being involved has always been important to me, as it’s when I feel most connected and able to contribute. I am especially excited about the opportunity to serve on the City of Goleta’s Public Engagement Commission. I care deeply about helping residents feel included in the decisions and conversations that shape our community’s quality of life. I believe civic engagement not only strengthens communities but also empowers individuals to grow and thrive. My background in community organizing, mediation, conflict resolution, education, and business management has given me the skills to support inclusive dialogue and collaboration. I’m particularly passionate about ensuring that communities who are often overlooked or underrepresented have a meaningful voice in the process. I would be honored to bring my experience, energy, and collaborative spirit to the Public Engagement Commission, and I’m eager to contribute to strengthening connections and engagement across Goleta.

31 Question applies to multiple boards
Describe your qualifications, experience, and education, and list any technical or professional requirements you have relative to the duties of the board, commission or committee to which you are applying.
I am interested in serving on the Goleta Public Engagement Commission because meaningful participation is not a side feature of democracy, it is the engine. My professional work centers on helping communities build trust, navigate conflict, and create conditions where people feel heard and valued, especially when conversations are difficult. I’ve spent years designing and facilitating restorative and community-based processes that invite diverse voices into shared problem solving, and I’ve seen how thoughtful engagement leads to better decisions and stronger relationships between institutions and the people they serve. I bring a practical, equity-centered lens to public engagement. My approach is grounded in whole community thinking and the Ubuntu tradition, the idea that we are shaped by our relationships with one another. In practice, that means designing engagement strategies that are accessible, trauma informed, and responsive to lived experience, not just the loudest or most comfortable voices in the room. Serving on this commission would allow me to participate in my deep belief in community wisdom in service of an inclusive and connected city.
Question applies to multiple boards
What are your goals in serving on the board, commission, or committee to which you are applying?
My goals in serving on this commission are rooted in learning, service, and stewardship. I want to listen closely to city staff, fellow commissioners, and community members to better understand where current engagement efforts are working and where they fall short, particularly for those who have historically felt unheard or overlooked. I see this role as an opportunity to help create conditions where participation feels meaningful, respectful, and worth people’s time and trust. I also hope to support the City of Goleta in strengthening engagement practices that are consistent, transparent, and grounded in relationships building. My goal is not to bring answers, but to listen, reflect, and help surface community wisdom and translate it into thoughtful recommendations.

Question applies to multiple boards
Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I live in Goleta with my family and have long believed that strong communities depend on residents who are willing to step forward and contribute their time, experience, and judgment. Serving on a City board or commission feels like a meaningful way to give back, stay engaged locally, and help shape thoughtful, balanced decisions that reflect the long- term interests of Goleta. Professionally, I’ve spent my career working closely with boards, regulators, and public-facing institutions, and I value the role that good governance, transparency, and public trust play in successful outcomes. On a personal level, I’m motivated by the opportunity to contribute constructively, listen carefully, and help the City continue to grow in a way that preserves what makes Goleta special.

I am a California-licensed CPA and a senior financial executive with more than 30 years of experience working with public companies, financial institutions, nonprofit organizations, and boards of directors. My background includes serving as a Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Credit Officer, as well as a Partner at national accounting and advisory firms. I have extensive experience in governance, risk management, budgeting, financial oversight, and strategic planning, and I have worked closely with boards and public regulators throughout my career. I have also served on multiple nonprofit boards, including as Chair of Audit Committees, which has reinforced the importance of fiduciary responsibility, collaboration, and clear decision-making. While my technical background is in finance and accounting, I bring a broader perspective that emphasizes sound judgment, practical problem-solving, and respect for community input. I am comfortable reviewing complex materials, asking constructive questions, and helping organizations balance policy objectives, fiscal responsibility, and public benefit.

My primary goal is to be a thoughtful, reliable, and constructive contributor to the City’s work. I want to help ensure that decisions are well-reasoned, transparent, and aligned with the long-term interests of Goleta and its residents...while keeping Goleta LOCAL and not becoming SB or the expansion of LA into our neighborhoods. I aim to bring a steady, practical perspective—asking the right questions, supporting City staff, and collaborating respectfully with fellow board or commission members. Where appropriate, I hope to apply my experience in governance and oversight to help evaluate proposals, assess tradeoffs, and promote sound decision-making.

My experience includes serving on the Boards of Trustees for: - ShelterBox USA (Chair, Audit Committee) - Santa Barbara Botanic Garden (Chair, Audit Committee) - American Red Cross, Santa Barbara Chapter - Santa Barbara Zoo (Finance Committee) - In addition, I previously served on the Board of Directors of the California Society of CPAs and have advised or worked with numerous boards in a professional capacity. These roles have reinforced the importance of stewardship, public accountability, collaboration, and mission-driven decision-making—values I would bring to service on a City of Goleta board or commission.
