FIRE DEPARTMENT

ACTIVITY REPORT
TO: Honorable Mayor Rios and City Council
DATE: May 16, 2022
FROM: Jason Muscio, Fire Chief
THROUGH: René L. Mendez, City Manager
SUBJECT: Fire Department Activity Report

RESPONSES
There 73 calls for service during the month of April for a total of 225 calls so far for calendar year 2022.

Most calls were medical emergencies and vehicle accidents. There was a particularly challenging rescue that took place in the mountains above Johnson Canyon that required coordination with CAL STAR, the Monterey County Sheriff, and CHP. Our Department also responded one engine to a mutual aid request from the Salinas Fire Department for the fire at the Taylor Farms facility on Abbott street. We also responded to a cardiac arrest emergency in the rural fire district and were successful in reviving the patient using our defibrillator.

STAFFING
Staffing remains at seven full time personnel and three active Volunteer Firefighters. We do not currently have any applications for Volunteer Firefighter or any candidates in process.

TRAINING
Crews trained at the shift level in firefighter rescue and advanced escape techniques, as well as wild land water supply operations. Lt. Vasquez continued his education towards a fire officer certification, and Lt.

Achen attended the second class of the fire mechanics academy.

EQUIPMENT
All apparatus remains in service and without need of significant repair. Our aging gas powered rotary saw was damaged beyond repair at the scene of a vehicle fire, and was replaced with a new battery operated saw.
