City of Gonzales
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & STRATEGIC
PARTNERSHIPS
STAFF REPORT
TO: Honorable Mayor Rios and City Council
DATE: June 6, 2022
FROM: Carmen Gil, Community Engagement & Strat. Partnership Dir.
THROUGH: René L. Mendez, City Manager
SUBJECT: Agreement with Health Career Connection
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council approve and allow the City Manager to sign an Agreement with Health Career Connection Inc., an Oakland based, national Non-Profit Corporation known as “HCC”, which works to prepare, inspire, and empower undergraduate and recent graduate students who desire to explore careers in the health arena including community health. This is done through a 10-week paid summer internship where the student is placed in an organization where they can learn and grow their skill set while exploring a potential career of their choice. This summer’s internship is being offered to the City free of cost by HCC.
BACKGROUND
The Community Engagement and Strategic Partnerships Director has a long-standing relationship with Health Career Connection (HCC). She has previously served as a preceptor for many interns, some of which have received job offers after their internship experience. Typically, the internship experience is sponsored by the preceptor organization, thus providing the funding to sponsor an intern, however due to the partnership and grants the organization has available this summer HCC has decided to sponsor the intern the City will be taking on at no cost to the City.
The intern will work a forty-hour week, while getting to learn and grow their skill set through hands-onlearning with the Community Engagement Department. They will also benefit from additional training from the HCC organization and will get to explore other health related fields through local fieldtrips to other local preceptor sites such as the Monterey County Health Department, Hartnell College Foundation, and Building Healthy Communities to name a few.

ALTERNATIVES
1). The Council can opt to accept this Agreement and begin to establish a partnership with HCC and determine yearly if they would like to bring in a paid undergraduate or graduate intern to work over the summer with the City in addition to the Gonzales Youth Commissioners. 2). The Council can deny the Agreement at this time and turn down the ten-week intern position.
BUDGET IMPACT
There is no impact to the budget to support this position given that the City will be sponsored by the organization to be a host to the intern this summer.
CONCLUSION
It is recommended that the City Council approve and allow the City Manager to sign an Agreement with Health Career Connection Inc. for a 10-week paid summer internship for the summer of 2022 free of cost to the City of Gonzales.
