Current Activities
Kid Power
• The first week of January was the last week of our Winter Camp Session before resuming Kid Power. Our group for Winter Camp was on the smaller side for the final week. Due to the rain, we were unable to go outside, nevertheless, the kids were able to have fun by learning about winter animals and hibernation.
• Kid Power started back up the second week of January. We had 37 kids in the program and one of the first activities we did was ask the kids what their goals were for the New Year. • Kid Power resumed “Fun Fridays” in January which included using a Wii and playing just dance with each other. Some of the younger kids were also able to make slime, while 4th and 5th graders did some team building and played boards games.
AGENDA
ITEM
11 • Kid power ended the month of January with a fire drill in collaboration with Fire Chief, Muscio.
Kid Power staff and kids executed the plan well. They exited quickly, got to the meeting location, and counted all of the kids within two minutes of the fire alarm going off.
City Sports
• 2023 has started off very well for our Sports programming. January is when we start our Youth Basketball League. Our participation numbers for this year are the highest they have been in years. We currently have 180 registered participants.
• There are 5 grade divisions within the Youth Basketball League. Our divisions are: PreK-TK, Kinder - 1st, 2nd- 3rd, 4th- 5
th and all boys 6th – 8th. We were not successful in getting enough girls for an all-girls 6th-8
th grade team, but we did get more than usual numbers in PreK-TK and 4 th
-5
th. This is the first time in over 5 years that our PreK-Tk division has had 4 teams, and our 4th - 5
th division consists of 4 teams of 12. Late registrations came in and they were not turned away.
This year our 6th- 8
th grade team travels and competes against Soledad.
• We have 14 head coaches. Three of which are coaching multiple teams. We have 8 assistant coaches, 3 team parents and 5 referees for our Youth Basketball program. • Registration for Girls South County Softball and Gonzales Mini Tee-ball opened at the end of January. Our numbers for Mini Tee-ball are always pretty strong. We are hoping for higher numbers in our softball league this season.
Activities in the Planning Phase
• In February, Kid power will be celebrating Valentine's Day with the kids, some of the activities include making lots of fun arts and crafts. We hope that the kids will enjoy themselves. • We are also starting to identify our staff for our summer programming and taking care of the pool needs to get ready for the summer season.
