TO: Honorable Mayor Rios and City Council
DATE: May 15, 2023
FROM: Carmen Gil, Community Engagement & Strat. Partnerships Dir.

THROUGH: Trevin W. Barber, City Manager
SUBJECT: Recreation Activity Report
Current Activities

1. For the month of April, we had a total of 41 kids registered for the Kid Power after school program. With Easter and Spring being right around the corner, we took the opportunity to do some activities that would correspond with the themes such as an Easter egg hunt for the children, learning about spring flowers and the breakdown of a flower. Lastly, they learned about the life cycle of a butterfly and did a step-by-step drawing about it. The third-grade group made beautiful chalk art outside and we wrapped up Kid Power by having the kids create and build their very own kites.

AGENDA
ITEM
13 2. Spring Break Camp took place March 15th
- April 5th with a total of 20 kids registered. Spring
Break Camp was given the opportunity to learn about the different City Departments that are a part of the city. Starting off with a visit by Fire, the kids got to spray the fire hose which was a treat for them! We then went to the firehouse the next day where the kids learned about what a firefighter does and all the tools they use and what they are used for. We also got to time David Vasquez on how fast he gets his into his gear. We also made a stop by the Gonzales Police Department as well and the kids were given the opportunity to ask questions, see the jail cell, check out one of the cars and speak over the loudspeaker. They had a great time!

3. City of Gonzales Adult Open Gym is still going strong. We are open two days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Participation is about 20 each night.

4. The South County Girls Softball league is going very well. Both divisions are having so much fun and learning so much. It is so rewarding to see how much they are learning and how much they are improving their skills each day.

5. Adult co-ed summer slow pitch softball registration has begun. We have 4 teams registered so far.

Last season we had 11 teams amongst two divisions. We are hoping for the same turnout this season.

6. Some of the girls from my 10U division softball team, Team Diamonds, came out to support the Gonzales High School Spartans Softball team play against King City on April 27th. They played here at home. It was an awesome game to watch. The Spartans went into extra innings due to being tied in the last inning. Our Spartans girls ended up winning 10-9 with a walk off double hit from Sophomore Angelina Navarro bringing in senior Josselyn Hernandez for the win.

7. Registration for youth flag football started this month. Numbers are slowly climbing. We have 12 registered participants so far. We will have 3 divisions with our youngest being between 5-7, then our 8–10-year-olds and our oldest 11-14. The oldest age division is popular as most of the registered players join the league to help with conditioning as they get ready for Gonzales Knight Tackle Football which starts the end of July.

8. Gonzales Mini T-ball is almost over. Our last game is next month on May 6th. At the last game all the players will receive a certificate of participation and a Mini T-ball medal.

9. On Saturday, April 22nd the Recreation Department participated in the First Annual Gonzales Unified School District College and Career Fair. There were various organizations and schools in attendance. We took this opportunity to discuss our job field and start recruiting for some of our seasonal summer jobs.

10. On April 26th, our seasonal summer 2023 jobs went live on our social media pages, and since then, we have received 12 applications. We are still accepting applications and are specifically looking for more Lifeguards, Recreational Aids and Summer Camp Leaders.

11. On April 30th, the City of Gonzales supported the Día Del Niño Event as it is one of our Measure K grantees. Various departments were at the event, including Fire, Community Development, and Recreation. Recreation hosted a coloring station for the children in addition to having other games such as Corn Hole and Connect 4 to keep the children entertained. It was a great time for children and their families.

Activities in the Planning Phase

1. City of Gonzales will have its first all Men’s and all Women's division 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament this summer. Tournament dates are set for June 24th, July 8th, and July 22nd. Up to 16 teams can register.

2. The Recreation Department is planning to commence interviews for Summer Camp and Aquatics in mid-May.
