STAFF REPORT
TO: Honorable Mayor Rios and City Council
DATE: May 15, 2023
FROM: Patrick Dobbins, Public Works Director/City Engineer THROUGH: Trevin W. Barber, City Manager
SUBJECT: Resolution No. 2023-18 Authorizing Vortex Industries to Replace Two Bay Doors at the Public Works Yard

RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council Adopt Resolution No. 2023-18, A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Gonzales Authorizing Vortex Industries to remove and replace two bay doors at the Public Works Corporation Yard for a not-to-exceed cost of $50,000.

BACKGROUND

Two bay doors that serve as “large roll-up garage doors” at the City’s Public Works Corporation Yard need to be replaced. The bay doors at the Corporation yard are original to the building and over the last six months they have been getting stuck on a regular basis. Last week, the bay door for the mechanic’s service area came crashing down after the restraining spring broke. Fortunately, there were no vehicles or staff under the door at the time. An overhead door company inspected the door to see if it could be repaired but the doors spring that holds it up had broken and it is not repairable.

REVIEW & ANALYSIS
At this time, there is no way to get vehicles into or out of the mechanic’s bay. The primary bay door has been getting stuck during the past few months. Public Works staff has taken great care to keep it working but it should be replaced before the same thing happens. Therefore, staff is recommending the replacement of two bay doors.

Four companies were asked for a quote to remove and replace one bay door and staff received the following quotes:
