City of Gonzales
CITY MANAGER DEPARTMENT
STAFF REPORT
TO: Honorable Mayor Rios and City Council
DATE: April 1, 2024
FROM: Carmen Gil, City Manager
THROUGH: Carmen Gil, City Manager
SUBJECT: Rename Job Description from Public Works Operations Technician I/II to Public Works Technician
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council approve renaming the Public Works Operations Technician I/II position to Public Works Technician and Approve the Revised Job Description.
BACKGROUND
The City has an existing Organization Chart and Classification Plan that is adopted annually as part of the fiscal year budget process. The Organization Chart shows the City departments including the allotted positions for each department and functions. The Classification Plan delineates the salary range for each position (classifications) within the Organization Chart, as well as the progression through the steps of each range.
The job description position should also align with the Organizational Chart and Classification Plan to allow for clarity and accuracy. Periodically, job descriptions should be updated as duties and responsibilities of a position evolve. Reflecting these changes also helps with recruiting candidates with the right skill sets.
REVIEW AND ANALYSIS
The current job description describes the duties and responsibilities of an Operations Technician I and II. By removing the Operations Technician II position from the job description, it will align with the Organization Chart and Classification Plan since an Operations Technician II is not a listed position.
AGENDA
ITEM
6 The duties and responsibilities of an Operations Technician I are the same as the Technician position that is in the Organizational Chart and Classification Plan. Therefore, to provide better clarity, Operations Technician I should be renamed to Technician.
