The Issue: Left Turns & U-turns
• Need 7.5 second gap
• Have 2.9 second gaps
Public Desire for improved safety
• Community-led Safety groups strongly support action.
• Concerned about closing the median without improvements to congested interchanges.
Source: TASAS, Cal B/C Model
Closing the median would prevent left
and U-turn crashes from occurring
• Reduce 75% of injury and 100% of fatal crashes
• Preventing an average of 1 fatal crash and 13
injury crashes from occurring each year
• Would see annual safety benefit of about
$15.87m./year
Long-term Solution
KEY LONG TERM IMPROVEMENTS ARE:
Close all at-grade access points and median openings. Replace interchange at Abbott/Spreckels & Chualar.
Frontage road on both sides connect Abbott and Chualar Interchanges.
