City of Gonzales 2025 Summer REuse, REcycle & Cleanup Day Report
July 1, 2025
Submitted to: Mayor & City Council of the City of Gonzales through the Office of the City Manager On June 28, 2025, the City of Gonzales held its summer REuse, REcycle & Cleanup Day event at Fairview Middle School. Tri-Cities advertised the event to residential customers through social media and direct mail. The eventserviced one hundred twenty-nine (129) vehicle loads.

This event provides landfill disposal vouchers for refrigerators and freezers at the Johnson Canyon Landfill. Bulky items such as mattresses and appliances are routed to the landfill for free recycling.

Moving forward, the event will no longer track items diverted to the landfill. We will, however, continue to promote the diversion of these items in advertisements and provide disposal vouchers for refrigerators and freezers.

The event focuses on preventing illegal dumping, helping residents "clear the clutter," and promoting reuse and donation. It facilitates source separation, recycling, and proper disposal of hazardous wastes, trash, appliances, mattresses, scrap metal, rigid plastics, and electronic waste.

Residents had access to free and safe disposal of ABOP (Antifreeze, Batteries, Oil, and Paint) materials and sharps containers through Salinas Valley Recycles. Monterey County Environmental Health coordinated a CalRecycle grantfunded oil filter exchange (up to two vouchers for free filters) and provided free oil and filter collection kits. Please note the uptick in hazardous materials collections for this event.

The event provided residents with 25 cubic yards of free compost from the City of Gonzales. Although it was advertised prominently, the community did not take full advantage of this offering. We will reduce the amount offered in the upcoming fall event. TCDRS delivered the leftover compost to the Gonzales Community Garden and the Public Works yard.

The "Take it or Leave it" area remains a big hit with the community. As anyone who has participated in these events knows, the reuse area contains many great finds. Our partnerships also enable us to support numerous community groups and non-profits.

Event Highlights:
• Gonzales Community Church Clothing Closet: Fulfilled their request for men's jeans, pants, and shorts. • South County Animal Rescue: Four large bags of towels, linens, and blankets. • Swimsuits were donated to a local pool and recreation program for those who could not afford them. • Volunteers collected formal and prom dresses for delivery to the MC Free Library's prom clothing program. • Save the Whales collected 100 stormwater surveys to support the city's stormwater management plan.

The Gonzales High School cross-country and track teams provided ten volunteers and 50 service hours. This group consistently meets its commitments with enthusiastic volunteers who exemplify the spirit of community service. Tri-Cities provided gloves, safety vests, lunch, and ice water. The cross-country and track team will receive a $500 donation from Tri-Cities Disposal & Recycling.

Thank you to our partners: Gonzales Unified School District, Trini Zavala, Monterey County Environmental Health, Save the Whales, and Salinas Valley Recycles.
