City of Gonzales 2025 Fall REuse, REcycle & Cleanup Day Report October 23, 2025
Submitted to: Mayor & City Council of the City of Gonzales through the Office of the City Manager On October 18, 2025, the City of Gonzales held its fall REuse, REcycle & Cleanup Day event at Fairview Middle School. TriCities advertised the event to residential customers through social media and direct mail. The eventserviced one hundred thirty-eight (138) vehicle loads.
This event provideslandfill disposal vouchers for refrigerators and freezers at the Johnson Canyon Landfill. Bulky items such as mattresses and appliances are routed to the landfill for free recycling.
The event focuses on preventing illegal dumping, helping residents "clear the clutter," and promoting reuse and
donation. It facilitates source separation, recycling, and proper disposal of hazardous wastes, trash, appliances, mattresses, scrap metal, rigid plastics, and electronic waste.
Residents had access to free and safe disposal of ABOP
(Antifreeze, Batteries, Oil, and Paint) materials and sharps containers through Salinas Valley Recycles. Monterey
County Environmental Health coordinated a CalRecycle
grant-funded oil filter exchange (up to two vouchers for free filters) and provided free oil and filter collection kits.
Save the Whales collected stormwater surveys to support the city's stormwater management plan.
The event provided residents with 15 cubic yards of free compost from the City of Gonzales. Although it was
advertised prominently, the community did not take full advantage of this offering. We will continue to monitor the community desire for this material and will make adjustments to the amount available to residents. TCDRS delivered the leftover compost to the Gonzales Public Works yard.
The "Take it or Leave it" reuse area remains a big hit with the community. As anyone who has participated in these events knows, the reuse area contains many great finds. Our partnerships also enable us to support numerous community groups and non-profits.
Reuse Area Highlights:
• South County Animal Rescue: Four large bags of towels, linens, and blankets, one animal carrier, pet pads. • Volunteers collected formal and prom dresses for delivery to the MC Free Library's prom clothing program. • Approximately 80 pounds of children’s books were taken to two different outlets for distribution to kids.

We had an abundance of youth volunteers for this event from the Gonzales High School cross-country and track teams, Salinas Valley Recycles’ Youth Council, and Save the Whales CSUMB student volunteers. Volunteers provided 100 hours of community service assisting the community. The cross-country and track team will receive a $500 donation from TriCities Disposal & Recycling.
Thank you to our partners: Gonzales Unified School District, Trini Zavala, Monterey County Environmental Health, Save the Whales, and Salinas Valley Recycles.
