Councilmember Martinez stated that she wanted to address that at the last meeting and this meeting there were two Councilmembers that didn’t want to excuse another member’s absence and stated that reality happens. She stated that there were a lot of folks asking why she did not seek re-election and this was one of the reasons why; because it was really hard to work with certain folks that continue to feel like this was a child’s game and not understand that there was life outside of the Council. She stated that she had been focusing on herself and her family because that was her priority. She stated that next month was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and asked that everyone get checked. She congratulated the Greenfield Youth Group, Future Leaders of Change, for being recognized by many unions up and down the County, She stated that they were recognized for the activism and for co-sponsoring a bill that was currently at the Governor’s desk. She thanked Centro Bi-nactional and Dr. Martinez for an amazing conference this past Saturday where she was able to be on a panel, with other elected officials, just to make sure that everyone understood the needs in our community when it came to housing, wages and lack of programs especially for the indigenous community. She suggested that Mayor White meet with Dr. Martinez on a regular basis to discuss these types of matters. She announced that there was going to be an immigration rights planning meeting on October 11th in Watsonville.
Councilmember Ortiz stated that the new store at the Chevron was opened and that Jamba Juice and Chester Chicken would be opening soon and were hiring. She stated that at Patriot Park there were events being held there and they were leaving alcohol containers all over the park. She stated that she thought there was no alcohol allowed at city parks and asked if these events were sanctioned or did if they needed permits. She thanked Public Works Director Tugel for the update on MST. She stated that she saw a social media post from City of Gonzales regarding the Hometown Home Heros banners that explained their process and stated that Greenfield needed to move forward on this. She announced that the first meeting for the Day of Thanks event would be on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Chambers.
Mayor Pro-tem Rodriguez asked if there was a motion to excuse her from the meeting. Mayor White stated that there was a motion; however, it was a 2 to 2 vote. She stated that she was hopeful that if she had called she would have been excused. She stated that she does work in Salinas and there was a lot of traffic on her way to the meeting and that was why she was late. She encouraged everyone to attend the Music in the Park events and stated that she was a bit disappointed because the attendance was lower than the last event. She requested a MST presentation for the October 22nd meeting and for City Manager Wood to get the Council re-cap on social media.
Mayor White announced that the Harvest Festival this year would be a two-day event, October 19th and 20th and there was a free tire recycling event at the landfills in September. He stated that he attended the senior social on September 18th and stated that these events were opened to anyone over the age of 60.
