Brenda Garcia Figueroa, representing the vendors at the Market at the Gazebo, stated that she was here today because at the last meeting not all Councilmembers were present and she wanted to make sure all Councilmembers were aware of what was going on. She also stated that it had been three weeks from the last meeting and there had not been a meeting set up with staff and the vendors. She stated that they had questions and would like to have that meeting.

Rosa Manriques stated that something that had caught her attention was the lack of stop signs on Oak Avenue on the bridge. She stated that it was dangerous area and stated that placing stop signs there would be helpful. She also stated that she looked over the park plan and that it was a great idea; however, she would appreciate an enclosed dog area.

Bulmaro Flores expressed his concerns regarding the Market at the Gazebo and asked that the City Council continue supporting the existing vendors.

Cecilia Moreno, resident and principal at Oak Avenue School, stated that she had a concern regarding the crosswalk that was right behind one of the stop signs. She stated that even though they have a crossing guard there, people drive so fast and suggested that a rapid flashing light be installed in order to bring extra safety measures so people could slow down.

Francisco Uribe read a letter asking for support of the Market at the Gazebo.

Marco Guerrero stated that he was one of the sons of Jose Romero, what was one of the Saturday Gazebo Market sellers and was here to speak regarding the potential changes to the market. He stated that the market was not just a market but a community. He stated that this was one of the cornerstones of the community. He stated that the rumor going around was that the proposed new manager would be charging at least triple the cost of the current fees and would remove all non-ag vendors. He stated that this would affect many vendors and the lifeline of some families and asked that the Council consider not changing the current market.

Juan Woo stated that he had been a vendor at the market since it was near the library. He stated that he sold jewelry, religious stuff and candles. He stated that the market started as a farmers’ market; however, it did not work, and he believed that the reason it did not work was because of the demographic of people that actually visit the market. He stated that the market was not a flea market; it was a market that sold a variety of things and that concept had been working for many years. He stated that if the Council still wanted a farmers’ market maybe they could combine it with the current flea market on Sundays and call it a Flea/Farmer’s Market. He stated that it had been a positive experience working with the City and would like to continue that concept.

Beatriz Diaz stated that LULAC 3298 was having a scholarship fundraiser selling donuts from Valley Donuts in Gonzales and they have sold over 200. She wanted to thank the Council and the community for the support. She also stated that she had concerns regarding the changes or potential closure of the Market at the Gazebo and asked that the Council not cancel it or make changes to it. She stated that the Harvest Festival booths were very expensive and stated that she would like to bring back the Broccoli Festival back at Oak Park.
