There are two vacancies on the Planning Commission due to the expiration of the four-year term of office held by Commissioner Cody McLaughlin (term expired on May 31, 2023) and the resignation of Former Commissioner Ron Rodman whose term expires on May 31, 2024. RE: Application to Serve on Planning Commission
I have been a property owner in The City of Grover Beach since April 2015 and a permanent resident since December 2020. I chose to make Grover Beach my home because it was a beautiful, affordable coastal town with a budding future. It was clear to me, when we bought our home, that there were many opportunities for commercial and residential development that would make the future Grover Beach a great place to live, work, and play.
I was born and raised in Livermore California. It was a dusty cow town with a very entrenched “No growth” personality. No growth is not a plan and it is not, in the end, an option. I watched many of their half-hearted development efforts end poorly because they were too-little-toolate or the wrong project for the needs of the community. While their “Main Street” is now a great destination, it took more that 35 years to develop and is still plagued by infighting over the right mix of housing, parks, and commercial space. In a nutshell, their master plan struggled under the test of time and changing public opinion.
I see an opportunity in Grover Beach to develop a thriving beachfront community. With the recent changes to the development code and a skilled and motivated staff, the city is entering the early stages of what can and should be a bright and prosperous future. Sound leadership, with vision, can facilitate this future. Growth is inevitable. Growth done well is the challenge. I bring a data driven, technical approach to the table that, I believe, will help meet this challenge.
Thank you for your consideration.
Regards,
David Swift, PE
