Dear Mayor Bright, Mayor pro Tem Robert, and Council members Rushing, Weirnick, and Zimmerman.
I am categorically opposed to making the City Clerk an elected position.
The role requires significant technical experience, qualifications, and temperament that need to be evaluated by thorough vetting and interview process. The City Manager and staff with whom the City Clerk works on a daily basis should be the ones making that hiring decision.
Longevity is an asset to us both practically and financially. I cannot see how putting the revolving door of the election cycle on the very person running elections is beneficial any of us. Except perhaps as a Pyrrhic victory to prop up the bruised egos of those who organized the petition.
