PROCLAMATION OF THE GROVER BEACH CITY COUNCIL

PROCLAMATION HONORING THE SOUTH COUNTY HISTORICAL

WHEREAS, the South County Historical Society was founded fifty years ago with a mission to preserve, protect, and promote the rich history and heritage of the South County region for present and future generations; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of its first president, Vard Loomis, and the many dedicated presidents and volunteers who followed, including Howard Mankins and Gary Hoving, the Society has remained a steadfast steward of local history and a valued community institution; and
WHEREAS, surpassing the typical lifespan of many local historical societies by more than a decade, the South County Historical Society stands as a remarkable example of perseverance, dedication, and community commitment; and
WHEREAS, the Society provides ongoing care and preservation for five treasured historic sites, each more than 120 years old-including three historic homes, the Santa Manuela Schoolhouse, and the IOOF Hall - safeguarding these landmarks as enduring symbols of our shared past; and
WHEREAS, the Patricia Loomis Library serves as an important research center for historians, genealogists, students, and residents seeking to explore and understand local history; and
WHEREAS, the Society's educational and outreach programs-including Readers' Theater, cemetery tours, student visits to the Santa Manuela Schoolhouse, and engaging historical presentations throughout the county-help bring history to life and foster appreciation for the diverse cultural heritage of the South County; and
WHEREAS, through the dedicated work of its curator, volunteers, and supporters, the Society continues to collect, catalog, and preserve invaluable historical artifacts, photographs, and family histories that tell the story of the South San Luis Obispo County community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Grover Beach City Council does hereby celebrate and honor the South County Historical Society on its 50th Anniversary, recognizing five decades of exceptional service, preservation, education, and community enrichment and extend sincere gratitude to its leaders, volunteers, members, and supporters-past and present-for their unwavering commitment to preserving the stories, places, and heritage that define the South San Luis Obispo County.
