RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation to receive and file the Beautification Program updated report for the month of November & December 2023.
SUMMARY
The City of Hawaiian Gardens Public Housing Authority created a City Beautification Program for exterior improvements for single-family, duplex, and mobile homes, and interior improvements for condominiums. The Program is currently funded through the Hawaiian Gardens Public Housing Authority and the General Fund. This report is an update on General Fund expenditures.
The intent of the Program is to improve the overall appearance of the City of Hawaiian Gardens’ neighborhoods, increase property values, and increase community pride. The improvements on the homes must be deemed beneficial to the overall exterior appearance of the property and address deteriorated and unsightly conditions visible from the street. Financial assistance up to a maximum of $10,000 is provided to property owners and up to $25,000 for substandard cases through a grant. There is also a $2,500 grant available for emergency cases.

CITY COUNCIL
STAFF REPORT
Agenda Item #B7
DATE: January 24, 2024
TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM: Ernesto Marquez, City Manager
BY: Steve Gomez, Public Safety Director
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation to adopt Resolution No. 002-2024, authorizing the City Manager to enter into a Facility Use Agreement with the American Red Cross.
SUMMARY
The City Council has adopted specific goals for the betterment of the community. One of these goals is “to ensure that community safety is a high priority.” A task within this goal is to “complete and maintain the Emergency Operations Plan.” Therefore, staff is requesting the adoption of this resolution. This will establish a partnership between the city and the American Red Cross. The American National Red Cross (“Red Cross”), a non-profit corporation chartered by the United States Congress, provides services to individuals, families and communities when disasters strike. The disaster relief activities of the Red Cross are made possible by the American public who support the Red Cross with generous donations. The Red Cross’s disaster services are also supported by facility owners who permit the Red Cross to use their buildings as shelters and other service delivery sites for disaster victims.
This agreement will allow the Red Cross to utilize the C. Robert Lee Activity Center, when needed, as a shelter for disaster victims.
