RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION
August 12, 2025
The Regular Meeting of the Hawaiian Gardens Recreation and Parks Commission is hereby called to order on Tuesday, August 12, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., at the Teen Center, 22325 Norwalk Blvd., Hawaiian Gardens, CA 90716.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice Chair Pedro Amaro.

Vice Chair Amaro made a motion to excuse Commissioner Hernandez. Chair Rodriguez second the motion. All in favor.
Also in attendance: Director of Recreation, Joe Jimenez; Adult Sports, Rudy Magallon; Youth Sports, Halbert Gutierrez; and Recording Secretary, Anabel Bribiesca.

Commission Action: Receive and File
Commissioner Rodriguez requested to pull item 3 on the Consent Calendar. Commissioner Gonzalez second the motion. Motion Carried.
Commissioner Rodriguez requested clarification regarding promoting city programs to individuals who do not use social media. Staff reiterated that informational program flyers are also handed out at schools.
Vice Chair Amaro requested to pull item 2 on the Consent Calendar. Commissioner Rodriguez second the motion. Motion carried.

Vice Chair Amaro requested clarification regarding how the city differs between Residents and Non-Residents.
B. DISCUSSION ITEMS
1. Youth & Adult Sports Presentation
Sports staff demonstrated a presentation highlighting Adult Sports and Youth Sports.
Commissioner Amaro inquired on the Boxing program and how to help the program grow.
Commissioner Amaro suggested organizing fundraisers for Youth Sports.
2. Recreation Organization Chart
Staff reviewed the Recreation Department Organizational Chart. Commissioner Amaro requested clarification regarding lifeguards and their location.
3. Special Events Update
Staff reported on the Pow Wow event.
Commissioner Amaro suggested a Dia de los Muertos theme for the upcoming Halloween event.
Staff shared updates on the upcoming Veterans Day event. Also shared a summer recap video.
Commissioner Amaro recommended staff presenting a quarterly video highlighting the recreation programming and sharing on social media.
C. ORAL COMMISIONERS REPORT
Commissioner Gonzalez inquired about having an Instagram page for the Recreation Department; Requests a presentation on the Summer Lunch program to include meal counts and locations.
Commissioner Rodriguez requested exploring tutoring for game room’s from teens; Inquired about the amount of money raised for the Pow Wow; Requested clarification about who staff will report to at the Pow Wow. Staff responded that Recreation Leader II will be leading, and they will be the direct contact.
Commissioner Amaro requests clarification regarding number of staff being present for Pow Wow; Also, the need to relate event information across internally within departments.
